As I understand it that is the way they are designed so you have to manually turn off the vents in the middle using the side wheels.

yeah all that works but always blows cold to face even when on hot not sure why its my second car that is doing the same thing starting to think the are factory like this. if it blew hot and cold it would be great when i didnt want nothing to come thru id turn them off like u said.

Yeah I know what you mean. I have owned three VH's over the years and they have all been the same -it's a factory thing.... weird huh?

Did your VH come with an owners manual? You should checkit out they reckon it's all to do with this magical ventilation system.....

The Max Ellery service manual explains the heater operation, unfortunately that's just the way the VH heater system is designed to work. It's crap I know.
It will only blow hot air to the feet and/or demister.

I've been considering if it would be worth the trouble of fitting a VK/VL ventilation/heater system. There's a bit of work involved (including cutting a hole in the passenger side plenum, and covering the existing hole in the centre of the plenum) but at least that way you get a full functioning heater system and vacuum controls
