    Question Few VK Problems....

Hey guys, i just recently brought a VK Commie and have found a couple of little problems i should have really checked before purchasing

First of all, i checked all forward gears on the test drive, but didn't think about reverse the problem is, it wont even shift into reverse let alone not engage dam it! will this require a rebuild or a whole new box??

Second issue is the speedo likes to jump around and have a merry ol time when the car is just rolling, let alone anywhere near the actual reading, is this the speed sensor in the box or will the cable and speedo also need replacing?

Last of all will i be able to paint my lpg tank in the boot? as it is strating to flake, will it need to be white or another reflective colour, as in i cant paint it blue, to be up to standards??

    Cheers

so wont shift into reverse means... when you put it in 'R' it just revs freely? have you tried pushing the 't' bar a little past the r and a little before it? as-in, slightly disengaged?

speedos tend to jump around when the ODO's have been messed with. might be a simple speedo cable problem, either not being plugged in the back of the dash cluster properley or the square hole in the gear being worn out. BUT it might also need a replacement odo. which isnt that big-of-a-deal either.

and finally... i have NFI what you are on about... painting the LPG tank? if its flaking off just get some aerosol can spray and load it on there. the thing is prolly out of date anyway. no one cares

    hope that helps.

With your speedo id say your odo is broken or is about to break, say thing happened on my old ute, and when i pulled it all out the nylon odo gear was stripped and was catching on the metal gear causing resistance to turn the cable then jumping across teeth releasing tension, which caused speedo cable to wind up and then it suddenly lets go and the cable unwinds again making it turn faster than normal for a split second which makes your speedo jump.

Im thinking its an auto because a manual will almost always either grind in or not wanna go in, i dont think ive ever seen one when you put where reverse is supposed to be nothing happen.

Yea sorry, its a manual and doesn't want to go in, iv tried everything! So replacing the speedo will be the way to go then? and for the lpg tank, it is converted to run on lpg and i was wanting to paint the tank a dark colour like a black or dark blue but will this be ok due to the new heat adsorbing properties

Engage reverse with the car OFF. We had this problem with one of our old dungers years ago.
-wanted to go backwards, had to stop, turn it off, put it in reverse, and then go.

If that doesn't work, get a new box and speedo cable. Shouldn't be much........

no. that would be the most expensive option and should be used when you have exhausted your other options. which are:

    1. pull the dash cluster out then grip the speedo cable with your fingers and twist it round. it shouldnt be able to spin at all. if it does go to point 2. when putting it back in, make sure the speedo is in really tight the cable has seated properley and the metal clip is holding it properley.

    2. get under the car, take out the speedo cable and gear, pop off the gear and check the little square hole. if the hole is round,it might need to be replaced.

if all that checks out fine, then replace your speedo. i mean you can go straight to the speedo, but its best to do your checks first cos it may not be the problem.

Have you pushed the gear stick down if a 4 speed? You have to depress or push down shifter to select reverse and its hard to lose reverse in a manual without losing all gears.

^^^ did VK's still come with 4spd's? If they did thats a very good reason as to why you can't select reverse!!

Yep I agree. I had a similar problem with my speedo (still do to some extent) and I was told by a (alleged) mechanic that I needed to replace the speedo so I went out and bought a reconditioned recalibrated clock, pulled the dash apart (which ain't great on the old girls) and replaced it only to find that it didn't fix the problem.
