does anyone know who and where would be the best place to do a resto on vk ss.cheers vic
and the rest
$5k for a really good respray
$5k for a retrim with material
$5k engine rebuild in and out just the basics nothing fancy
plus suspension, brakes, gearbox & diff, extras such as headlights, indicators, tail lights & other mouldings.
I reckon I have spent $20k on my VK over the last 5 years rebuilding it myself and there is loads I want to do to it still if i had the time and money.
Really every part of the motor industry is a specialised field, one place cant do the lot, if your not doing a thing then a panel beater to strip to the shell, suspension place to rebush & do ball joints ( I know a mechanic can do it but a suspension place can align it at the same time and see if anything is bent. brake place to hone and rebuild master cyl & calipers, maybe new brake lines.
engine out to a mechanic & gearbox to a gearbox place or a mechanic who knows gearboxes aussie 4 speed is pretty easy to rebuild, back to the panel beaters to paint the engine bay & body
over tot he motor trimmers for the headlining, thent he windscreens go in
tot he mechanic for the engine and gearbox then back tot he motor trimmer for the carpet, seats and door trims
happy days a drive in drive out rebuild could cost up to $25-30k easily depending on how much you get done
cheers

First you got to ask your self the simple question is it really worth it??? If you believe it is, make a budget on how much you want to spend. Then think realistically is it WORTH IT lol? If you still think its worth it hope you are going to be able to afford it because panel shops are not cheap. Not to mention upholsterers charge an arm and a leg. It all really depends what you want, i'm an apprentice mechanic and can only spend $150 a/week on my project but I have planned my build to take around 4years to finish. Seriously at the end of the day don't do it unless your willing to spend the money as any work you dont do yourself will cost you TOO much. Hope that kinda helps, just don't start a project and give up halfway through as you'll just basically throwing away your hard-earned away.
Good luck with the build if you decide to go through with it
No project or very few are financially viable, but if you find it rewarding, enjoy it plan to keep the car and use it then yes it is worth it.
I built my car to drive, now it sits in a shed as im too busy to drive it but i know one day i will and its ready to roll as soon as i am. I will never get what i have spent on my car back but i know i will get my value for money out of it.

i knew i was looking at 20k plus.ive had it 20yrs,enjoyed it now its time to get it looking new again, to drive on special occasitions and take to car shows.i have collected most hard to get parts, lights etc so when its time its ready to get done and i dont have to to look for the bits and pieces.interior in ok nic just outside and running gear needs a freshing up.if any one has new geniune parts for vk,or bluey parts to sell i will pay good money for them if ive i havent got them.cheers
Well you obviously know that you are going to keep the car because you have had it for so long. I don't really know where you are but MR Restoration on the Gold coast is a good place. One of the painters is absolutely amazing, he basically paints like a mirror finish straight off the gun before buffing. Plus the guys there have done alot of awesome builds and resto jobs, off the top of my mind a heap of old holdens(ek,hq etc etc). Just if your going to get it done don't cut corners as it may come back to bite you in the arse in the long run.
