Hey people,
I'm starting a restoration of an 84 VH SL/E and I want it to look the same way it did the day it came out of the factory (this one never made it to a showroom)
The problem is that While visually it will be stock I still want to have a decent sound system and need somewhere clever to hide the head unit so I can still have a stock one sitting above the ash tray as normal.
I plan on having a head unit that runs off an MP3 player/iPod so I dont need to have easy access to it while driving as long as I can skip tracks and change volume via remote.
Any suggestions of where i can hide the thing?
under the passenger seat. plenty of room. run the wires under the carpet.
Edit: I just reread you post, count the below as pointless info.
What about something like the redirad?
RediRad Classic Car AM radio adapter- MP3/Satellite Radio to AM band
they ship to Australia.
lol, its an AM broadcaster. its cool tho cos' the top pic on that page is a 65 or 66 impala
you can get these:
they come in hundreds of different models, but mid 80's im not sure about. plus the LCD screens are fail. low pixle res and it just looks yuk.
Hi - Not sure what you plan to do with the existing speakers on your vehicle. If they are original (in particular the two front ones) and you are based in Melbourne I would be interested in picking them up and taking them off your hands...
Friend who has a ZD fairlane is putting it in the glovebox and keeping the original fascia as is
Joelcktt, I'll eventually be replacing all the speakers with new ones. The speakers in the front as far as I know are pretty stuffed. Work on the car isnt to begin for quite some time but no doubt I'll have plenty of parts available for free and sale when the jobs done. I'll make sure everything available will be posted in the forums.
I had my sound system replaced by Ryda on Parrammatta road in Sydney and they cleverly matched and custom fitted new speakers (JBL for the front and Kenwood for the rear) so that the original speaker covers still fit over the top - looks very original except I do have a new stereo head but it isn't too fancy so doesn't look too out of place.
yeah after putting mine in th glovebox of the impala, i'd have to say that i dont like it. cos' the screen is LCD you cant see it at all. you have to actually slide over to see whats on screen. its just a bright coloured blank screen on an angle.
prolly gonna move it lateri supose the commo isnt as wide, but if OP does go with the glovebox option, he is limited to to certain screens....
something to consider anyway.
