temp gauge problem

Hi Guys . I was checking that everything worked on the dash in the VH and found that once i had turned the key on the temp gauge would work it's way to above the hot mark . Is the sender unit buggered ? It's the one that screws into the front of the 4 barrel manifold .

could be a short to ground along the sender wire or yes the sender unit is crook

Probably a short, as sensor usually give a nil reading when the decide to pack it in but it could have gone the other way and be giving a full earth connection.
