I am in quite a dilemma at the moment, I have just put together a worked 202 to go in my VK Commodore, the engine is as follows;
- Roller Rockers
- ACL Race Series Pistons (60 thou bore)
- Stage 3 Cam
- High Volume Oil Pump
- Electronic Ignition
The problem I am now facing is deciding on whether to go with the original EFI or convert my VK to Carby (I have a reco 350 Holley ready to go). Has any body had to make this decision? Can anyone give me some advice or pro's and con's of there builds? Just can't make up my mind.....
Anything would be much appreciated!
Thanks
Any particular reason?
efi reasons:better economy, better response, more reliable, more power and less head **** coz u already have efi in
I would have thaught that you have no choice due to smog regs.

Hmmmm, fair point sam5l the car is still pretty gutsy at the moment even though its seen better days... But that leads me to wonder, will the EFI run with all the engine work? I've heard some people say it won't yet I've seen a VK for sale that has the same work done and runs fine (looks 100% original under the hood), although I'm unsure if they've altered the computer?
vk jonno is right i have a mate with a heavily worked efi vk but it runs a microtec ems expensive but good.
Hmm in that case if it isn't going to work without upgrading the computer it will have to be carby because I've seen the upgraded computers can be very expensive and I don't have a lot of money to throw around...
holleys are good for power but heavy on fuel
Mmmm I'm leaning towards carby, I have a 350 holley with a matching candy red air cleaner ready to go on, that might be the go.... Otherwise there's to much modifying to get the fuel injection to run.... Then again maybe i will just try the injection first and see what happens.... :S
You can do efi on the cheap using a delco ecu from a je camira or a vn.
Four commodores and counting.
If your car was originally EFI, then you should already have most of the parts ya need(EFI intake, EFI fuel pump & regulator, throttle body, harness etc..).
All ya might need to do is use is higher flow injectors, but with the same thread size, shouldn't be hard to find, and your EFI comp should still run it, with better economy, and meet the tight emissions laws we have now.
Might be a headache to gettin carby to pass inspection on a vehicle originally fitted with EFI, plus you would still need to remove your EFI fuel pump, and install a high volume, but low pressure pump and filter, cause an EFI fuel pump might blow the guts outa ya carby.. lol

I would definitely go with the efi system that is already in the car - I can't see any reason why the computer won't work with the engine you are about to put in.
Yeah sounds plausible. The only reason I was thinking of going to the carby was that I had heard so many stories about the EFI not running a worked engine. I intended to keep the EFI system and later upgrade it with the addition of a turbo as they would be a lot easier to set up on the EFI apposed to the carby. Has anyone used a VN Delco computer on their injected VK? I'm keen to know if there is a lot of work involved in hooking one up, and does anyone have a wiring diagram etc that would help?
Nah, the EFI will run fine on a mildly worked engine. You'd be able to run an XU-1 street cam without any hassles and a little bit more zing. Also look for a gemini torque converter to get it off the line a little quicker. If the car's already stock EFI and most of the gear is there, then it's the easy option just to go that. The 350 holley won't compete compared to the EFI. Trust me, i've been there. The only better setup for a 3.3 other than EFI is triple SU's which in-fact will leave the EFI for dead.
Cheers!
Hmm sounds like a plan might just try it and see what happens, if it works it works if it don't it don't. I doubt I'm going to need the torque converter as an aussie 4 speed is going behind it, later maybe to be replaced by a supra or celica 5 speed. I already have the 4 speed behind the original engine which is a little tired but it still quite quick off the mark.
So i guess I'm just going to have to try it, see what happens, if all else fails the trusty 350 fuel hungry carby will save me!
Cheers for all your help!
