Default Performance/economy of Red motor with auto

    Hi all,

I have a 1979 VB sedan with the Red 3.3L auto in 100% stock condition, and was going to share some things and see if what I am experiencing is reasonable.....

PERFORMANCE - fine around town (50-60 zones), 70-80 zones need a bit of pedal pressure. Out of town in 100 zones it can maintain the legal speed limit...with some effort. Hills really drag it back, like some long steep hills will see it dragged back to 85-90kmh. But this is rare.

Fuel economy - 12L/100km highway, 16l/100km in town. (or, 500km out of 60L tank on a trip, 400km/ 60L tank in town). This is with 98 octane.

Any thoughts? BTW the car is as tuned as it can be, mileage unknown, using some oil but not fuming or blowing any smoke. oil loss probably from leaks.

    Does the above seem ok

Thats probably about right unfortunately. The red motors in the vb's were one of the most choked up underpowered 202's ever. Poorly flowing 9 port head + heap of emissions crap = no power. Had a massive 63kw or something. Mine's a blue 202 with an extra 20kw or so, and it does pretty well on the high way, doesn't hold on so well up steep hills, but sits on 100 just fine.
    Four commodores and counting.

My HX with red 202 gets about 400-450km (depends) on a tank.
It'll go fairly well on 100km/hr will do more if pressured.
But hills with the 202.....lets just say it's not it's cup of tea. Depending on the hill and what the road is like before it, as you try and sort of boost yourself up, it'll go anywhere between 70-90km up.
Mine is an 88kw. I didn't realise that the commodores had such a low kw rating.

Yeah the kw rating in the old girls is pretty ordinary. Considering the standard 202 in the UC Torana was about 109kw. On the bright side though, you'll always be able to out run a n/a diesel land cruiser. Now they are slow.

My VC had the standard blue 202 bored out to a 4litre with a over sized cam, 40 thou over size flat top pistons. Redline Torquer 2 inlet manifold with a 350 holley whacked on top, extractors with 2 and a 1/2 inch exhaust system. doeesnt go like the clappers but it still sits comfortably at 100 and could do all day. i can get it around 10-12L/100km on highway driving and 13-15L/100km town driving and that include an occasional floggin haha
