big phillips screw driver. smash it into the side of the filter as close to the top as you can to be 100% sure you are not going to hit the thread. punch the driver all the way through both sides and then use the handel to twist it off. if its still too tight put pressure on the handle and tap the other end of the driver with your hammer. just tap, or you will end up ripping the filter open.

also warming up the car first usually helps. doing it cold can sometimes be impossible.

    +1 to that.

They stick mostly cause people dont put a smear of oil on the O'ring when fitting them, it helps alot for next removal believe me.

tighten up by hand as far as you can go and about 1/4 turn with wrench

Actually, you don't even need a wrench, tight as you can go by hand is enough(making sure oil has been wiped on the seal first).
Then after filling and checking the oil is at the right level, go for a short drive so the engine gets hot enough.
Then come home, let it cool enough so you don't get burnt, then check by hand again, done.
Over tightening of the oil filter can contribute to it getting stuck on.
It can also 'cause' an oil leak, as the rubber seal get crushed 'too' much, to the point where it loses it's ability to seal properly.

ok, use a wrench with a metal band strap. Use pliers to do it up nice and tight. Position the handle close to the engine block. Now, use your wheel brace as a lever, and try to get that to budge it. Won't damage the engine block, its pretty solid. Give that a go....

Mate eat some wheetbix and have another go, ive done mechanics for many years and had some real buggers but a screw driver punched thru the filter and alot of force ALWAYS worked for me. so put some muscle into it or get a mate to have a go.

+1 for chisel on top edge of the filter on the seam.

Sometimes its on so hard that the screwdriver just peels the tin housing away from the thread, so if it starts doing that try a chisel on the harder part right near the oil pump, or pull the whole end off the filter and then unscrew the whole thread from the oil pump housing, the thread is a large allen key but i can't remember the size.

See if you can borrow or buy a filter strap and just keep unwinding it with a ratchet. If it still won't come loose get a mate to hit it with a hammer and chisel while you are putting pressure on it with a filter strap. You use the chisel at the back of the filter where the seam is. Just give it a couple of hits to put a dent in it and then hit so the impact is pushing down.

Can't *be a red motor(legally) in a VH, can only be blue or black.

Could try it that way, but might just mean a new oil pump gasket too.

mate, if the screw driver didnt work, a wrench isnt going to. plus now that it has a hole in the side of it, it'll just crush when you apply pressure around it. the chisel idea is a good one, and one i would try next. the little band right down the base of the filter hit it straight on so you put a little dent in it, then hit it 45 degrees. if you could have a mate turning the driver and the same time then it'll come off for sure.

remember you only need to tap it cos you are trying to break the seal between the rubber and your pump. keep pressure on it and tap, you might need to bust your gut but patience WILL get it off.

And don't forget to soak it with WD40 or CRC or RP7, where the face of oil filter meet the oil pump, might help break seal from sticking.

and triple check that you are turning it anti clockwise...

did you try putting the screw driver back in and attaching like a long pipe or something.

the more leverage the easier it'll be
