Default setting timing on modified carby 202 black

    hi,
as some of you may be aware I have recently changed to holley 350 and sounds great. (also have extractors/exhaust)
the dizzy is a HEI?? I was told as the EST module is gone etc. and there is a vacumm line to dizzy all hooked up .

car is running well but need to check/set timing and on the modified dizzy etc how do I do this? and what would be best setting?
how do I rotate dizzy? is it that little bolt under it?

    thanks
    jas

    k. first things first, get some liquid paper and carby cleaner. rotate the engine to #1 TDC and clean the timing cover/harmonic balancer marks, then go over the lines lightly with your liquid paper. rotate the engine to 4 DEG ATDC and put a new line where the 6 degrees mark, this will tell you where 10 degrees is (4 plus 6 = 10) this will make your job ten times easier.

is there is a 14mm bolt on the base of the dizzy with a metal fork holding the dizzy body to the engine. just loosen it off, dont take it out.

the only time you really need to mess with timing is if you have done some engine work, i.e. higher comp, advanced cam etc. so factory specs, or at least close to it should be enough for you. from memory its 8 degrees BTDC, but could be wrong.

so take off the vac advance line and plug it up so you dont lose any vac (it should be connected to ported vac, so at idle it shouldnt have any vac anyways, but still block it off) put your timing light on number 1 spark plug, pull the trigger and aim the flash at your timing cover mark. every time the light flashes you will see your liquid paper line somewhere. you need to turn the dizzy either clockwise or counter clockwise and you will see the liquid paper line will move either closer or further away from the timing cover mark. you want to make the mark just a little bit before the 10 degree mark you made.

    make sense?

there is another way which involves a lot of driving and tuning by ear, but i think you should just stick with doing it the proper way for now.

nice work there ari, usually i take mine out around the block and flog it to see if it pings ect, rev out limit pull over tune haha ect ect.. i just move the dizzy with my hand!

at the moment my car idles to high so i tuned it rite then next day its to low hahaha..

make sure you have no air leaks, the valve that comes from the end of the rocker cover blew on me once and wouldn't idle so i just cable tied the pipe in a knot and was like brand new.. but now i have one..

vacuum lines dont really do much but slow the car down.. all it is is pollution gear? i only have one from manifold too dizzy

just some information it may not be correct, some people say vacuum lines are better but correct me if rong

Best way to set a modified dizzy is to mark 32 degrees BTDC on the harmonic balancer and then get your timing light, point it on the balancer and rev the car to a constant 3500 rpm or around that, make sure its in park with the handbrake on and the 32 degree mark should line up with the TDC mark on your timing case.

If its a standard dizzy refer to what was posted above.

If you use the Method by Ari666, 8 degrees is fine but if you can get away with 10 then even better, if you try 10 and it knocks under hard acceleration reduce it to 8.

Check tightness of all inlet manifold nuts and bolts too.

yeah all manifold bolts tightened when I put on a whole new gasket.

will be a few days, but will try and get around to it ASAP
