Default 290mm front rotors - Caliper Options

    Hi All,
Just put 290mm curved slotted rotors on the front of my VK with standard VN V8 single pot caliper. See pic. Didn't realise that the V8 VN caliper uses the same brake pad as VK 270mm rotor. This means there is a lot of unused brake surface on the inside of the rotor. Perhaps a standard VN rotor is 290mm but the brake area is not as wide as these aftermarket rotors?

Are there any other caliper options with 290mm rotors that use bigger pads? Twin pot?

    Thanks.

vt calipers use more but should be on 296mm discs so they may be a bit big. are you sure you have the v8 caliper not the v6?

Yeah the v8 calipers were the finned ones, same as in his pic above. I think the VL turbo's and V8's had the same as well. I know when ya put them calipers on older cars ya have to change the rotor as well as the v8's had bigger rotors which suited the finned calipers......not sure on sizes tho.

If ur worried about ya brakes tho, best thing to do is to upgrade to vt brakes.

Not really worried about the brakes, performance is fine, even with drums out back. It's more the look...
Yes VT adaptors hubs and rotors etc are the way to go. Just gives heaps more options. It seems it pays to upgrade the booster and master cylinder as well due to the greater volumes of brake fluid being pushed around. I'll be going to rear discs at some stage too.

What brakes did the VN SV500 have?

Dont forget when picking calipers you not only need to check the diameter but rotor thickness, the VT rotors are thicker as well.

If you want to keep your existing rotors check out volvo, nissan skyline & 300zx calipers you might find something suitable for your size rotor.

I run VZ Twin spots on the front and VZ ventilated discs and calipers on the rear

And yes it stands on its nose

    cheers

Here's some pics I took during the process of chucking our VT brakes on our dirt circuit car. I can't believe how easy it was. Could prolly do it in half hour if ya get into it. We got our kit for $400.

    Old brakes.

New seal and bearing on all greased up.

    Hub adapter on.

    All done!

    Old rotor with new rotor.

    Old caliper with new caliper.

The hoses come with it. I actually got them 2nd hand. The guy who bought them new, put them on his VL, then ended up scrapping the VL I think so he pulled the brakes off and I bought them. The only use they had was pushing the car around, don't think the car had even been driven with them on. So yeah when I saw them for sale I couldn't say no. Was the whole kit, rotors, PBR calipers, hub adapters, bearings and rubber lines.

So the kit you bought is an after market VT spec Rotor and caliper which bolt straight on with the adapter hub?

Yep. Took the old calipers and hubs off, removed the bearings and cleaned the old grease off. New bearings went on, with new grease and the hub adapters. Rotors went onto the hub adapters, then the calipers went on, bolted to the original calipers mounts, chucked the pads in, tightened everything up, then chucked the rubber line on to replace the old one, which connected up no worries. Bled them, then she was all ready to go.

I had no idea it was that easy, just another quick question. Whats the go with the brake hose, is it a custom made one or VT one?

Yeah custom lines I presume. Just go visit a brake or hydraulic shop and they should be able to help ya. Brake shops might have them in stock already, hydraulic shops should be able to make them. Maybe take a VT line and one similar to ur own in, so they know wat ya need.

In early model Commodores you're far better off going to a VE caliper kit like this:
VE Twin Piston Upgrade Package suit VB-VZ Commodore!!!
than the VT ones because it won't require a change of master cylinder, because the VE pistons are more appropriately sized. They're also a better caliper, with less flex than the notoriously bad VT ones.
