aye boy im new around here i have a vh wagon thats looking pretty sad and i was thinking of giving her a respray, new interior ect. its currently a 253 and i was wondering if it would have to have a inspection if i wanted to put a 308 in?? or just a simple engine number change?? im in SA if that matters any help would be great. oh and while we are at it dose any one no if a hz tonner would have to go to regency if i put a 308 in it?? right now its a 202??
cheers
To change from a 253 to a 308, just go to motor reg and change the engine number. Don't tell them it's a bigger motor, just say you changed it...if they ask, just say it's a 253 like the one that come out, they won't know unless u get someone that knows their 253/308 engine number prefixes.
Regarding the HZ....not 100% sure on that. My VK had a 202 in it and was rego'd as a 6. We put a 308 in it, filled out the form from motor reg, but gave them a number off another motor we had coz the motor in the VK wasn't gonna stay in it. Turns out the number we gave them belongs to a 253 (the block I took it off has been restamped apparently lol). The guys at regency picked up on it, and said we'd have to submit another form with another number on it.....about a week later got the new rego sticker in the mail showing it now rego'd as a v8......they must have changed their minds lol. But yeah apparently if ya put a 253 in, it's a simple changeover on the system coz they're slow (exact words lol). So maybe chuck ur 308 in, but use the number off ur 253 just to get the rego transferred over to a v8......then when it's all clear, change the engine number at motor reg to the 308 number. That should work.

cheers mate sounds like the vh is getting a 308 then!! dunno about the hz i might give the Vehicle Inspection Centre place a ring because ive heard a few diffrent things from going from a 6 to a 8 cheers
don't know what state you are in, but in Qld if the engine was a factory option then no inspection/mod plate required.
However they may wish to sight the new engine number for themselves before they change the records on the computer
