Hey all,
Just a quick question, where can I get replacement globes for the dash near speedo etc..
Does fleebay have any or do i need to go to somewhere specific?
I kind of know what the globes look like not sure what to ask for.
Thanks heaps.
It'd be best to take a blown bulb out and take them in. the bulb type is not listed in the owners handbook (i think), it suggested you take it to a dealer....but is simple to do yourself.
ill save you the bother. the globes are BA9s, you have a couple of options, original which are 5W i think, LED which are a lot brighter but not as good cos they dont shiny in a sphere, so parts of your dash will be brighter than other bits, or there is a halogen Ba9s which is bright as hell but gets hot and would probably melt something.
personally i would just get the standard bulb. i just replaced all of the ones in my impala and it looks awesome, not too bright, not too dull, they way it was designed to look.
Thank You kindly ari666.
I will go to repco and get some.
yeah but the probem with them is there still isnt the viewing angle you get from a bulb. bulb shines light in a 180x360 degree sphere and only has two dead spots where the two elements rise up and join, whereas the actual light emitting bit of that diode is recessed into the base, meaning it only shoots out a cone and the sideways light is lost.
the reason in sucks is in the back of the speedo cluster is a bunch of white reflactive paint, designed to bounch light around and light things up. the LED's dont bounce the same cos of their viewing angle and you end up with dead spots where there is a lot less light.
also, if there is 1 inchy-weensy spot where the reflactive sponge stuff has worn out (which will be most of the dash) the LED's are so intense that light bleeds out and reflects off the clear bit of the speedo, totally blinding you to whatever is underneath. i know cos at night i wouldnt have a clue what temp my car is or how much fuel i have cos' i stupidly put them ingonna go back to bulbs when i CBF pulling it all back out again.
Thanks again for that, Right i'll order the correct ones from repco or something, My speedo is playing up too, I got it to work last time by moving the gears around a bit and it worked for like 3 days then stopped again, might need an oil, it's only the Km's & trip meter that don't go up, the speed works just fine.
So i want to oil up the gears and replace the lights at once.
well, if your feeling handy, the VERY best way to get the dash back up to original brightness is to clean it.
when dust settles on the reflective paint it no longer reflects, and i can guarantee after 20 or so years, there will be plenty of dust. i set at mine with a bottle of metho, box of tissues and a paintbrush.
i must advise to BE VERY CAREFUL, lol, you dont wanna take paint off, just the surface layer of scum on the white bits (back of the sppedo/tacho, all the white plastic on the back panel of the dash, basically anything whte. lightly brush a little bit of metho on and then keep lightly brushing till it looks clean and dab off the metho with a clean tissue. dont go all hap-hazard, just do a little bit at a time. once thats all reflective again itll be bright as day. also if you can find some stickybacked sponge then reapply that, cos that seals up the gaps where light isnt supposed to go through. i used sikaflex, but wouldnt advise it to anyone. seriously.. dont use sikaflex.
just a thought, if you have a camera it might make a good "how to" thread![]()
I'll make the how to thread on this then, saves other people from asking the same question.
I'll make it once i have the lights, by any chance you don't know how many i need ?
Ari666 i'm not all that handy or knowledgeable with things like this, but I am with computers, you've been such a great help over the last few threads i've posted, if you never need anything let me know, I'm a tech by trade working for Apple.
The information you have posted has been very valuable.
soz, dunno how many in total. think it was about 8.
and yeah, i hope all that i said has ben corrective been known to be wrong before.
