I'm thinking of rebuilding my red 253 for the VB complete with 2bbl carby.
Any suggestions?
I will be adding a new 2row chain, mild cam and reco heads and a freshen on the bottom end.
ACL gasket kit and rocket red paint.
I know a 4bbl would make it go harder but I not long got a reco 2bbl carb for it and can't justify the coin for another carb/manifold ATM.
Thanx.
you've done extractors and exhaust already? extractors with 1 1/2 inch primary pipes are good for 253's, because it helps the bottom and midrange torque not top end power (which there isn't much).
could go a HEI distributor while you're at it.
what 2 barrel carb is it?
Yes have HEI. Carby and manifold are standard VB units
Get the deck heights checked on the block. The original factory machining of the blocks were not real accurate. Some blocks ended up with more compression on one bank than the other. The original 2 barrel carby is best for low down throttle response but if you want to rev it hard then go for a four barrel carb and manifold.
every time someone posts up "what do i do with my 253" i have the same response... so far no one on here has done itplease please please, give it a go. i would really love to see what it would do.
It is not my first, I love the little bird scarer but it is the first one I will be keeping the 2bbl strommy and manifold.
I will also be adding VL GpA extractors and an undecided stage 2ish cam, keeping converter, box and diff (2.78) standard, will be a daily and want to keep in under or around 3000rpm on the freeway.
do you know the diameter of the pipes? can't go too big on a 253 or you'll lose heaps of driveability.
my vb with a 253 has a crow 5602, and it really gets in its element at about 2500 rpm. not that its bad under that, but it all starts to come together and keeps pulling to around 5100rpm then its time to change gears.
Not sure on the size the pipes are but they are not huge by any means. They look pretty much the same size I have used in the past with similar setups and a 465 holley with great success.
ah ok. you thought about going roller rockers or something with a higher ratio? i think yella terra still do 1.65 ratio plus roller rockers. my old man has run a fair distance on them (over 80,000 kays) and they've been good. you can have a milder cam but still get the lift which is nice.
Yella Terra - Part details
stays under stock rocker covers which is nice.
Nah no rollers, on a budget, also have factory A/C so stock height rocker covers are a must with the bracket.
I have collected most of the parts now and have started on a set of heads for it so I thought I would freshen the thread with a before pic.

I just don't get why you would spend money on a 253 just go buy a stock 308 and keep the boat anchor in the shed if it's a matching numbers block so much more affordable when you consider how far you can go with a 308 or even better a VN-VT 304?
And your not braking any new ground with what your doing, please don't waste your money!

Yes I know, if you get anymore manly you are in danger of making yourself pregnant!
If your going to rebuild your motor then just buy a good re-builder 308 all in it's exactly the same dollar wise?

I agree 100%, it's up to you, but with the money you'll be spending you might aswell get a 304. Have a look at some of commodore wreckers near you, i used to see some nice engines lying around when i used to get parts for my vh there. Also get rid of that old air cleaner, and get a K&N one, better air flow, and the filters last forever.
I agree either a 308 or the 304 but mate its your build and its completely up to which way you go about it.
a 308 build will cost the same as a 253.
But not everyone's top priority is hp. As mentioned above, everyone has done up a 308, maybe this guy wants something a bit different.
It's like these days everyone tells you not to bother with an EFI 304, 'put a LS1 in it', easy to make hp etc etc. But not everyone wants a LS1
This 253 boat anchor label pisses me off.You dont hear everyone saying to piss the LS1 off and go L98 each time they ask to mod there engine.Good results can be had.
1 1/2inch primaries, matchported manifold, baby crow,465 or Rochester, hardened valve seats and 1.65 rockers will give great response with a little necksnappin lol.253s sound tough as due to the smaller bore same stroke scenario.
Heres a stroked 253 out to 286 to wet your tastebuds.Topgear 8000rpm,that will do it.YouTube - ITS 253 in the Burnout finals at Summernats 23
Yeah its a 292 but stroked to 286+60thou overbore. The sound is ear piercing to say the least. He travels alot this guy, very keen.
Go the trimatic also lol.
