Hi Guys . Having a bit of a dreaming session and was wondering how hard it would be to fit an LS3 into a VH commodore . And what would need to be done to make it pass a roadworthy ?
Cheers Mick .
HOLDEN. Not just a car . But a way of life !
It's in the blood and deep in the heart !
i think the ls3 is just slightly bigger and better than the ls1, most of the differences are on the inside of the engine, not so much on the outside. with that idea in mind i would say if it fits then about the same amount of effort and time as an ls1,
oh and a lot more money
it sure would be a crazy machine tho haha would love to see it done
The motor most likely would fit, just a matter of trying to get the exhaust manifolds past the chassis rails (or so Ive heard with the LS1/2 conversions?)
there have a fly by wire one thinks so there would maybe be a bit more wiring problems involed maybe
A pedestrian is someone who thought there were a couple of Litres left in the tank.
MSD make a crank trigger system to aid with all the tricky stuff,a few nice carby(mechanical injection) kits to go on the l98 ect out their.
im sure there would be a way around the fly-by-wire t/b, i did a fair bit of research into this swap, well L98 into vs i looked into but similar enough.
anyway, u need a starter relocation kit to swap it to the other side, exhaust is a headache, bugger all room and the off-the-shelf headers from the usual suspects are a lousy fit apparently, needing to be bent and squeezed in order to fit. custom pipes seem to be the go but they are mega expensive. with stock style engine mounts the sump hits the x-member bracing and the more they sag the worse it is, and the motor sits on too much of a rearward lean with the gearbox x-members on the market so i hear, although these problems only need spacers to fix. mkal automotive and muscle garage make a better type of engine mount for the conversion but its around $500 for the pair.
to make it legal so long as it falls within the engine size limits in your state, passes a noise and emissions test and still has all the emission gear a new GTS would have, it should be all good
my mate has jus started to fab all lsx motors in pre 1997.. he has a vp ss ls1 very tuff car.. you should deff do it lolYouTube - VP SS Burnout at Murray Bridge Autofest 2010
Hi guys thought you mite be interested im am puuting a ls3 into my vh sle in 3 weeks , should fit like a peice of cake ! ...ihope
Yepp, you can mark me down as interested!
Post pics of your progress, and any extra info on the conversion in general that might help anyone else, if nothing else it'll be a great read!!

vn 5ltre out ready for bay works
Ahh hell yeah!!! Love the looks of a nice tidy VH SLE, looks pretty clean!
Love the plans mate, have fun smoothing the bay, its a bit of a pain of a job - hand sanding...lol
Looks like it would've been a nice ride before with the 304, now its going to be insane with an LS3 in it.![]()
Too hard dont do it just twin turbo your 5 litre or something lol Im doing a LS2 into the VH and is about 12 months away from completion when mine is finished yeah then get a LS3 for sure lol
engine bay all done just getting painted next week ! just waitin on all my chrome stuff back then car paint to be completed should be together in a month , then ready for engine
when do you think your SLE will be completed?
ls3 and ls1 are the same externally there are plenty of vb-vk commos with ls1's castelmain rod shop sells the kit
you should buy a ls1 stroke it and put some good heads on it will be a 6.4 this way have more power and it will pass rego/engineering eaiser with the 5.7 crank
karrratha hey, is all your work being done up there
i approve of this thread, and LS3 into a VH, that is awesome.
