how much cash you want to spend how do you want it to look and last?
for one old heap I had a few years ago i sprayed it with QD enamel it only lasted about 18 months but it only cost $25 for 4 litres not recommended.
Acrylic is about as cheap a paint a backyarder can use will last 5 years out in the weather and not look too bad.
Use 2 pack if you can youll need a mask and dont tell anyone.
i never thought about areosole cans. cos i am pretty broke and the paint on my car is starting to realy get bad so i might go with the aerosole cans n give them a try. what type of paint did u use?
my paint is the same, thats why im doing a bit of testing with the aerosol paint (also on tight budget)
i went to a specialist auto paint shop (spetrum auto paints [in tassie]) i got them to mix me up the same color as my car from its color code (rhone green) , they did a great job on matching the color. took them about 10-15 minutes and cost about $25 per can and $10 for clear coat so i got 2 of each. (you will have to find out if the paint can go over the top of old paint [after uve sanded it of course] or whether you have to rub it right back to metal and use primer aswell)
acrylic based paints
it took about 1 can of color to do a group 3 bonnet scoop (about a third of a bonnet as far as surface area goes) and 2 cans of clear coat (dont skimp on the clear coat, i did about 5-7)
i havent given it a rub back with wet and dry to get rid of the orange peel effect yet, but it looks great and very shiny so far. i did the grill on my VH today and that looks pretty good too, the most important thing is to take your time and dont rush it, i spent about 2 days doing the bonnet scoop in the shed (mostly waiting for drying time), remember over estimate your drying time, i gave it double what it said on the can because i live in tasmania, has to wait for a warmish day and put on the heater aswell
any scratches or anything will show up in the paint unless you use a really fine sand paper
i am by no means an expert and this is my first time painting with auto paint, but i just did my research and did some practice and got pretty good results. if you have any more questions dont be afraid to ask![]()
oh and if you are paint on plastic bumpers remember use the right kind of primer underneath
i will try and get some pics up of how the paint went tomorrow, the paint on the bonnet scoop is good enough to make the old paint on the car look bad, if thats any indicator of how good it is![]()
Take a look at this: How To Repaint A Car – Part Two – Preparation
I'm about to respray most of my Kingswood by hand, the above link helped me a lot, sadly it's not complete at the most important part!
Can someone please tell me what needs to happen after you have sprayed the paint on? do you then apply a clear coat ? and then cut and polish?

PaintScratch Spraycan Instructions
thanks for all the help mates very useful... yer i will try and not rush it and if i stuff up im just gunna pull the motor out and put in another vk body with original cream colour paint that i got lying around. but cant hurt to have a go![]()
I'll post up some pics of the spray can job i'm currently doing to see how good you can get it if you like?
yer that would be good cheers![]()
Heres a quick pic of the paint on the scoop, doesnt have the clear coat on it there but paint looks pretty good, havent had a chance to go out and take some more pics yet hopefully tomorrow
yer the scoop looks good but what bout the rest of car? has that been sprayed too?
naa just the scoop, the body paint is crap at the moment, but you can see the difference between the 2
Hey dude,
Here is the pics.
Before (can't see in photo but paint very thin and panel dented and scratched)
Now (no clear coat, the white line is due to the light behind the panel, it's evenly coated, hasn't been sanded back just painted with under coat and dents removed)
I will post a complete photo soon.
hence quick pic?, got some more here now anyway.
remember the paint hasn't been rubbed back yet, so still has orange feel surface, so the reflections are still quite blurry

What did you use for the clear coat?
motospray clear top coat acrylic i think its called (in an aerosol can), paint was good but the nozzle spray wasnt that great, the nozzle spattered it more than spraying a fine mist
it was just what the guys at spectrum paints handed me when i said i needed clear coat aswell
ok kool, I"m atm spraying the clear coat on mine, it's not as glossy as I would have liked but a zillion coats later i think we will get there.
I'm currently using the 3M branded Clear Gloss.
Ill post up some pics once mine is back on the car.
yeah i think ill go with something like 3M next time, or better if i can find something. To get mine to go glossy i had to put on a LOT of clear coat each time i did a coat with a lot of overlap (about 75%), otherwise it went a bit dull, but once i got the technique down it would pretty well, has a nice deep look to it and will only get better with the wet and dry, will post some pics aswell when i get around to buffing it
when it comes to an entire car guys, might be cheaper just to hire a compressor & spray gun.
If it takes a can just to do the bonnet scoop @ $35 (colour & clear) then it's probably going to cost you more than hiring a compressor & gun to do the entire car. Paint is cheaper by the litre too, rather than cans
just a thought
yeah better idea to use the compressor and i would recommend that first before aerosol cans, you will get a better finish and a bit cheaper aswell. but in my case i find it a bit easier because i dont have the time or space to do the whole car all at once, i dont have a garage to put the car in, so taking bits off the car and painting them separately is a bit easier for me, but as im doing that im going to buy all the color at the same time so the batch is the same, and then use them one by one.
yer i havent got a garage or anything.. i am 16 and havent got tht much money on apprentace wages so im going to do it as cheap as possable.
thanks for all the pics loads of help cheers![]()
remember that a bit of polish and wax and elbow grease can work wonders sometimes, or atleast make it a bit better until you can afford that paint![]()
