There shouldnt be a reason to shorten it, there would be a shaft to suit the gearbox somewhere, and would be much cheaper then paying for shortening and a re balance. You should be able to use the cars original tailshaft front half to the Salisbury's rear providing the shafts youve got are both 6 cyl ones, they come apart at the center uni joint or "constant velocity joint" as the holden manual states.
Be careful with swapping halves of tail shafts. I put a 10 bolt Salisbury in my 202 VH trimatic originally thinking that the tail shaft would fit straight in (with the correct yoke that is). When that fell through I tried to interchanging the trimatic front with the salisbury rear. The allen bolt holes didn't line up. they were about 5mm out for each one. I ended up getting a VK V8 one shortened about an inch to fit. I think I had to get the rear section shortened. If I wasn't getting on a plane bright and sparky in the morning I'd measure it up for you and tell you exactly.
Also I ended up having to get all the joints replaced and balanced by Hardy Spicer Adelaide. Joints, cut and balance cost me $485. Car cost me $500.
