hey all.
as the title states, has anyone made a custom dash for there vk? even vl's or earlier models?? Im looking at doing this next week. would like to see some pics of end results or any ideas/tips..
i was thinking of using the current strip of warning lights/indicators that is under the instrument cluster. then cut out some wood to fit the rest of the gap in the dash and cover in leather or vynal.
any recomendations for guages? if i go vdo gauges can i use current senders? (apart from speedo)
cheers
pat
i think some people have mate, and i would like to custom mine aswell as i don't like the current one, not sure how to go about it
i have kinda made one. i started and never got around to finishing it. i dont think i have a pic though, will hunt around. but basically its where the little buttons go. i cut all the buttons off, save for the heater control, and fitted a flat bit of plastic in there, cut out a 60mm hole and in goes my cheap arse ebay vac guage, which has now stopped working.
it looks really fail at the moment, but when the impala isnt taking all my time i will set to and bog/shape it and spray it properley.
sounds good. im looking at taking the dash out completely and having an aftermarket speedo, tacho, volts, water temp, oil pressure and fuel gauge. using the original warning lights.
I am considering putting in the VP tacho cluster into my vk when i do a V6 conversion but still using the original warning light strip and vk cluster face with the middle bit between the gauges cut out and then the vp gauges stuck in behind for a semi stock look or something along the lines of that.
ok i have made a backing plate. it will be covered in black vynal and looking at getting white gauges. only trouble is finding a km'h speedo and tach that are 70mm or less and fuel, volts, oil press, coolant temp and clock that are 4cm or 1 1/2" i have found gauges these size but none that all match up as a kit. any help will be appreciated. il try take some pics
here is some pics
im thinking vdo cockpit titanium gauges
Hey Mate, heres some pics of a custom autometer dash i made myself.
heres a couple for you, I have a 1/2 finished custom insert for my VK, I closed in the holes in an original cluster and when i can justify spending the money plan on a VDO classic set of guages. It took about 2 full days plastic welding the panel up ready to cut holes in it for guages.
what I dont like about the custom sets, they always look tacky around the demister & electric antenna dash buttons.
cheers
Scott
