Filled the old girl up yesterday, parked the car on a slope came back at the end of the day to see a couple of holes in the bitumen under the car. Seems like the tank is leaking around where the filler neck joins the tank, the tanks is newish no cracks and all the lines have recently been replaced and are not leaking.
Is this something that can be repaired or does it just have to be replaced. being the opposite side to the exhaust it should be okay to drive around? how much petrol do you think will be lost through vapor?
Had the same problem with my last 2 VH's. Turned out to be the rubber return line that goes from the filler neck (I think)back to the tank. Always leaked when I filled the tank right up to the top. You need to drop the tank down to get to it. I got a mechanic to do my current VH when I was having some engine improvements done so not 100% sure what is involved.
Probably a bit of silicon around the hole haha.
Thanks Derek, at lest i am not alone on this one.
I thought most silicon glues would be melted by the petrol and looking for a permanent fix really.
once sikaflex goes hard its hard for life. we used to use them to fit restrictors inside filler necks (so you couldnt use the super pump on an unleaded car) and never had one come back.
having said that, im sure there is a better fix. dunno if the tanks are the same but there is one massively annoying hose on the VK return which runs through a little bit of steel between the car and the tank, so you have to kinda half drop the tank, reach in, take off the hose calmp and remove the hose.
i watched the wreckers just slice one in half to get the tank out. god those guys are dodgie.
