Hello everyone.
Thought id do a post asking people for ideas.
I have a 1981 VC Commodore ' Vacationer L' 3.3l (blue) Auto.
It was olive green but im currently sanding it.
I was thinking of Cosmic Purple with black interior.
Anyone else have any better ideas?
In the process of cleaning up the car im going to attempt to move the battery to the boot, removing the a/c unit and all the vents in the dash. two reasons for that is id like to have a very clean engine bay with just a beautiful 308 sitting there.. and removing the vents will make great locations for gauges.
Id also like to know how much of a job it would be converting it from a 202 to a 308?
and if a roll cage is legal? if so how can i manage getting one in?
( was a tad worried after seeing the VC commodore crash test on youtube :/ )
any other handy or good looking mods anyone can think off?
I live in SA so it has to be legal to the SA rules.
Thankyou![]()
except change the "battery into boot" to something like, "308 conversion"
i think purple would look f'king horrible, but its your cari think the olive green was a really nice colour on these cars.
also dont let that crash test vid on youtube scare ya. that wasnt a commodore, its actually a korean car called a daewoo prince royale:
it failed that test pretty badly.
BTW, i know they're all VH's not VC's :P
Colour is up to you, nobody can decide but you. Personally ive always loved the Monaro yellow, like the VT ones. And the HG model one i like as well.
I hate yellow on VB-VC-VH :P
but thankyou anyways.
heres a fair few more colours..
oh, and a rather LOW one haha
its right there! pic number 4. standard colour, but with modern 2 pack.
vk sl 202 summed it up. colour is a personal choice. if your having trouble making a decision on what colour you want, then the correct colour can always be found stamped onto the build plate.
Well i guess thats the colour solved.
My main goal with this car would be to beat Falcons and VR-VS's
what motor/setup should i be looking at for this?
well that all depends. first off, probably the best advice i can give you from my own expierences is map everything out before you get started. first off you should get a big piece of paper (poster size) and a marker pen and put it up somewhere near where you are going to work. on that piece of paper you should write down you goals. take into account a lot of factors but always be reasonable. if you set your HP sights too high itll blow your budget or it may end up being something you just cbf driving and it will end up parked in the garage while you drive your EK civic to work.
so think about:
how much you can spend over what period
what sound you want the engine to make (i.e. VROOM, tsu tsu tsu, psssh, etc) it may seem like a stupid idea, but thatll tell you what type of engine you want.
what you want to use the car for if you do like my mate and build yourself a 650HP 377 chev SCREAMER, and expect to drive it to work and back your being an idiot. his cam doesnt kick in till 5000rpm and the fuel bills will just be un-justifiable, if you wanna use the car as a daily, then be civil. if it is just for weekends, then go all out. want it to be a 1/4 mile car, then build it just so, or maybe a dyno queen, thats up to you.
take a lot of time to carefully research what engines you like, followed by what specs you like and consider carefully whether it suits your ultimate goals.
once you have decided on exactly what you want WRITE IT ON THE PAPER AND DONT CHANGE YOUR MIND!!!! lol. i have been um'ing and ah'ing about my engine since i bought it and i was wasted tonnes of money in the process buying and re-buing parts i didnt need to.
im guessing your on your L's or P's, purely based on your choice of colour, so (if you want to drive it now, and dont wanna do a long term project build) i would stick to the stock engine/trans and drive train, but get it all tuned perfectly. dont spend a cent on mods, spend all your money on your build, stick to your piece of paper. itll save you loads of money in the long run.
i have 2 cars, have spent roughly the same amount on both, but i am more excited with my impala, simply because i had a ultimate plan when i got it, and as yet havent deviated far from that goal. whereas the VK has been "oh look, this cam has higher lift than my old cam" and yeah f' it, 3.55 diff gears is what i want. not really checking if they suited.
hope that helps
just noticed your display picvery nice, kill the roof and KILL those side steps and thats a very nice car
just to add, dunno if everyone does this or if its just me but when ever i see a lowered/resprayed/hole in the bonnet/mag wheel VH commodore i think "ugh, POS" whenever i see an old guy driving a clean, stock, unmodified VH i think, damn i want that car, that car is NICE"
Yeah, i believe im going to go by what you've said, word by word. and the picture is from when i first got it. and i did what you said a week or so afterwards. But i havent got any pictures of it without the skirts.
The colour is what i can not decide on..
i wanted a everyday car so i was thinking either 253-308 something smallish.. but still has the V8 pride.
i am on my P's, and have only just found out that the power re-striction laws dont do any harm to me at all.. it made my year.
I want a colour that'll catch someones eye, i want it to be seen and loved.
which is why at first i picked purple, because not every day you see a purple commodore, or a early one at that.
but im a major muscle car/classic fan. i love cars that have something like a faded paintjob but you know under the bonnet, you'll be speachless.
Definitely go with the 308, don't waste your time with a 253.
Just my opinion.....
nah +1. wouldnt waste my time with a 253. i think i remember this car, you posted a thread ages ago about how to remove the vinyl roof. im still dumbstruck that it was painted underneath, but still excellent score.
Ah yes, that was meright back when i first bought it
$300![]()
I might add, 253 has less power and torque then a standard VN-VR V6, it less refined ect, but it has the V8 factor there is just something about the noise they make.
This whole project im trying to keep as cheap as possible because its all roughly being payed for by youth allowance due to the fact that i have no job.
so id love any tips
people mention the VB crash clip - please not the car was loaded up and weakened, and the equipment itself was being tested at a new CrashLab installation. Car was not being tested.
second picture in the #3 post that purple.. that is an awesome colour and i suits an old car (or a newish kinda clubsport *ponders*) yeah love the purple mate.
Hey mate check out my ride changed from green to a bluey purple colour with black interior, and took out the old 202 and fitted a 308 with turbo 350 gearbox
