On one of the sides (not the front or back) there is a small cut-out at the base of the light/where it meets the bumper, big enough to get a small-ish flat head screwdriver in to push the metal retaining spring/clip, you need to push it in (towards the light it self) and sort of wriggle it up like a hinge, one side (not the front or back) has two plastic tabs that 'lock' in under the bumper bar. Once you get it half up, (like a hinge) its just a matter of sliding it accross to 'unlock' the plastic tabs and presto!!

Problem is though, the plastic perishes, and the metal spring rusts to the bumper bar, so it can be a bit tricky to get out with damaging the light housing itself...
You can buy new ones, I got one for my VH a while back, but it was a while ago, lol.

    Goodluck!

EDIT: Or undo 4 bolts and take your bumper bar off It'l make it heapss easier to get to,

    No probs mate

Heres one on Ebay, I was trauling through ebay anyway, typed in 'VH number plate light' and came up with this...
Its secondhand, but looks resonable. But if your's is still good , no need to get one.

VB VC VH SLX SLE SS HDT Number Plate Light - eBay Other, Lights, Indicators, Car Parts, Accessories, Cars, Bikes, Boats. (end time 21-Aug-10 17:27:31 AEST)

Also, another thing I remember, the light earths through the metal pin, where it touches the bumper, (pretty sure anyway) sometimes it gets rusty, or a bad connection and stops working. Making you think its a blown globe.

If the metal spring/clip is all rusty where it touches the bumper, just give it a proper earth - solder a wire onto the side of the globe/holder (like the positive side, wire straight to the metal holder) then follow the positive wire back into the car and earth it out inside the car either where the tail lights earth, or another on of the tail light screws/bolts. Just make sure its a clean bare metal connection.
