hey i managed to get my hands on the borgwarner box i wanted to know if they are any good my dad rekons there sloppy going through the gears
From what I've heard they are awful, if you have a motor with some work done to it, the box won't last for long. If your willing to spend the money your better off opting for the celica or supra conversion, even the aussie four speed is better than the borgwarner, which is what I decided on.
dam I was happy that i bought the manual conversion but lol now i feel like i wasted my money that pisssss me off
If you take it easy with a carb 202 it will work but they arent very strong and WILL BREAK if you give it a hard time.
Either get a T5 out of a later commodore or falcon 6 or celica/supra 5 speed. If your happy with a 4 speed the old aussie 4 speeds are a good box
you certainly didnt waste your money buying the conversion most of the parts can be used with another box, you can always onsell the box
cheers

Theres nothing wrong with the shift on them mine is quite good but as said not the strongest if your pushing a few horsies. Behind a stocker it should hold up all right my does just fine.
so what box can i fit to it useing the parts i got will the T5 go in using the manual tailshaft and speedo cable
T5 will fit but will need a different end on the speedo cable, clutch cable will work, may need a new clutch plate and tailshaft mods also nothing too hard

a four speed out of a toyta corona fits just need front yolk changed they are a fair bit tougher than the borgwarner, i killed mine pretty quickly(borgwarner that is)
well see being my age im gonna be race shifting so i dno if its gonna handle it lol but im not gonna be throwing it from 4th to 1st lol nothing like that just more race shift on take offs and a few burnouts at some shows hahaha so yeh
coz im putting a 350 holly on it and its got plans for an exhaust thats about it for engine mods oh and elec fan and gilmer
I have one of those boxes behind my turbo 202 with around 300rwhp been in for 2 years now and no dramas. I dont do burnouts or roll backs or try to change faster than a V8 super car but it has been drag raced ALOT and is still going strong umm well still going anyway.
This is not gospel just a little something I read on another forum, If you can get one from a VK 202 EST, they are stronger than the ones fitted to a 173 earlier commodore or the 5 speed starfire models. You can tell the VK one at a glance because it has a hole in the top of the bell housing for the crank trigger sensor. May explain why some break when you look at them and others tend to hang in there. But like I said I dont know how accurate that info is.
Might add to above post that the VH gear ratios are also different as my 5 speed shit a bearing due to incorrect installation by previous owner and when i bought a VH gearbox for parts as my center housing got cracked , i found it to have different ratios, a bearing on 5th gear where as vk one is a bush and circlips marginally larger on mainshaft (whole for them was deeper as well). All else was the same as far as i could see.
