Default VB,VC,VH,VK Headlight relay upgrade results?

hey guys im just curious as to whether anyone has put relays on the early girl so the headlights receive full voltage and so i can then later on put better bulbbs in with out risking melting the loom. now i know how to wire it in etc just use the origninal wiring to the headlights to switch the relay etc no problems there ..

i just did some quick test the other day and found that there was nearly a 2 volt drop at the headlight . so i quickly just made a jump wire to the battery and i had a slightly brighter lights so thats a good start

has any one else done it and wat bulbs would you reccomend if i was to upgrade i have heard good things about phillips range

i may do a "how to" on it depending on feed back here
and now have to get rid of my 19ssv's off my wagon ;-( so i am looking for some nice 18's or 17's willing to swap my SSV's for a clean set of wheels with cash ajustment because me being 18 and stubborn i wanted to keep them but after a look at how much work there really was in mini tubbing it i have decided against it

yeah had relays on my VK for years after I melted a headlight switch, fuse rail and headlight wiring with high wattage globes.

The resistance is what kills the connectors and wiring, you will notice a huge difference in your lights when you do it.

USE STANDARD wattage bulbs else you will melt wiring etc and possibly cause an engine bay fire.

I got a hold of the original wiring harness pins and made heavy duty headlight harnesses and found the wiring harnesses held up but the plug sockets melted so best to stick tot he standed globes

NICE do replacement H4 globe sockets if ya ever need replacements. I'm sure they'd have to be made of a better material then those of 30 years ago.

    Part number is TS286.

I put standard vn-vs type square headlamp relays relays in the space behind the lefthand strut tower...used the bases that they normally have and made up a bit of a bracket so they all fit together and ran a larger red 12v cable that teed off the large cable that fed the starter cable from the battery.....worked well and thats where I put all the relays and fuses for the efi that I later installed...no voltage drop...looks neat and is easy to get at and saves the headlight switch and those dodgy fuse bases inside the cabin from melting.

this: HID XENON Conversion Slim KIT H7 H1 H4 H3 6000K 8000K - eBay Headlights, Lights, Indicators, Car Parts, Accessories, Cars, Bikes, Boats. (end time 30-Sep-10 19:40:24 AEST)

is a 35W globe. doubt you will have any wiring issue at all if you direct swap them with your H4's, the only problem is they run really hot so may have issues with thesurround of your headlamps, but since they have glass lenses im sure it'll be fine.

plus these are OOODLES brighter than a halogen.

My VH has this done, double relay with it's own fuses. just use some of those +50 type blobes. the other problem is that the reflectors in the headlight become dull which effects light output as well.

have also done the same with the starter motor circuit to save the ignition switch

I've hooked up a headlight relay and bypassed the standard crap ceramic fuse (which is always a source of problems) and fit up a blade type fuse.
Results were quite remarkable. Headlights now work as well as any new car, and I'm only using standard H4 globes

I wacked some 55w HID's bi's in mine and would not go back to halogen, 5 times brighter with the big VK reflector.
Does not run hot at all.
