reco the quaddy
how are you determining that it was running rich? cos' there a re quite a few adjustments on them that all need to be done relatively accuratly.
to start with, there is the idle mixture screws, two screws on the front of the carb. you will need a vac guage to get them right, secondly there is a primary mixture adjustment inside the carby that you need a thin piece of pipe to adjust. also its best to do that adjustment with either a gas analyser, O2 sensor or the 'spark plug test'. lastly there is the secondary metering butterfly control spring which holds the secondary flap closed.
once you have adjusted all those things correctly to suit your engine, there is no better carb IMO. a quaddy can be a 300CFM carb or an 800CFM cabr, depending on how much vacuum it gets. i love em'.
also you say your quaddy has died... what went wrong with it?
edit* i have made a detailed write up on quadrajets here: how to rebuild/ modify quadrajets (also vac hose diagram)
it should have pretty much al the info you need to rebuild or tune your quaddy, but i am yet to post the method of adjusting your secondary metering flap. but will do in the next few days (if i can be f..ed)

the carb leaked petrol everywhere and was told it was stuffed, im a bit of a novice when it comes to carbs and only played around with the mixture screws.
found this on trademe, any thoughts appreciated

waste of money. yours should rebuild ok. are you based in NZ? i only really know places in Oz for buying stuff: Hume Performance hume are the best in the business no doubt. they have all genuine GMH parts. stay away from sues carbys off ebay, one of their 'rebuilt' carbys i bought fell to pieces after a while. tubes falling out, seals not sealing, float levels set all wrong, crap needle and seat assemblys etc.
if you MUST buy a new or reco, these guys sell them: Eagle Auto Parts
but personally i would get a rebuild kit and fix it yourself.
yea im from nz, thanks for your help
