You would have a hard time trying to find one of those in a store these days. NOS is extremely rare too. The best bet is to keep an eye out on eBay as I have seen them pop up from time to time relatively cheap.
There are really easy to pull apart and fix too.

people should trust their mechanics, rather than thinking they are always trying to rinse them of all their money.

I think he wasn't intentionally insinuating that his mechanic was trying to strip him of money not required - more to the point that he would like to keep the vehicle as close to original as he can.

I do trust my mechanic, the bloke at the cruise control shop though didn't seem the least bit interested in helping me repair the unit. He just wanted $550 to make a new cable and fit it, then another $600 to fit some aftermarket crap i don't want. I understand these parts are now obsolete but shurley someone, somewhere must know something about these set ups.

Does your speedo jump around as a result of your transducer being stuffed? I have exactly the same problem with my cruise also, and like you would like to repair it to keep the cars originality. I got a used transducer on ebay which I'm yet to fit - hopefully this weekend so I am hoping it will fix the problem. I understand that sometimes the brake light switch set up can sometimes interfere with the operation of the cruise master - could be worth checking out....

make sure your speedo cable(s) are all in good nick, they stick and can give a false reading. the loop cable is prone to trouble due to its loop.
