How to fix gear box

Hey Guys i have a couple of issues with VH, it has a M21 4 speed, sitting behind a 308...

1st issue, I cannot get it out of reverse without levering the linkage or selector (no console just hole in the floor) for first and second... I only need to push it back a millimeter or two and it comes back over the forward section.

2nd issue, clearly related is that it doesn't quite reach into first after doing this and will either pop out with a hard bang, or just grind a little.

sometimes it comes right quickly and some times i just can't use first for that trip.

So how do i fix this properly, I understand that box it self has seen better day but until i save the coin for a replacement i have to make do, thanks in advance for your suggestions.

1: Adjust your linkages correctly thats why its not selecting gears properly
2: Could be the same as above bust also movement in the cluster, it may need replacing, or machined out and sleeved
What oil are you using in it? The best oil I have found in an aussie 4 speed was VMX80, I had an XU1 toranna box in my VK and had nice smooth gear changes in it with VMX 80

To adjust linkages you need to find neutral points for the gears, its really a 2 person job unless your used to doing it. have someone shift through the gears and watch how the linkages move the arms ont he side of the box, then adjust them accordingly to get the right throw/travel.

Lol those where the days I still remember having worn & out of adjustment linkages and selecting 2 gears at the same time 1st & reverse, under the car on the side of the road int he rain trying to select netutral.

your problem sounds like worn linkages or linkages needing adjusting.
