Hey all

Ive only been driving since Jan 04 in the car my familly gave to me which is a VK SL Stationwagon (Black 202 straight 6, 4 spd manual). Im just looking at some diff ways to get a little more power and possibly economy out of the car.

The main course im looking at taking is probably to fit a cold air intake and get a proper air filter. I am just wondering what are the costs involved for getting a CAT installed or getting a kit, I assume it isnt that hard to fit. Also neone heard any good things about the hiclone air management thingo which u fit to ur air filter?
Are their significant power or economy advantages to CAT or new air filter (or that hiclone like thingo).

The other option i was thinking of was to switch to EFI. Now i dont nearly know enough about engines yet to do it myself, any ideas wat it might cost to have done and any places (I'm in Perth) which would be good to get it done at. EFI is supposed to get over 20kw more then the carby and i expect pretty improved fuel consumption.

Thanks in advance for any advice on the issue.

Intake modifications are mainly for EFI vehicles, rather than fitting CAI it's better to go with a different carb and a better flowing round sports filter. Then if you really want cold air a hornet bonnet scoop or similar will look after that.

If you do a search or have a look around the VK section you'll see Kim is doing up a carby black motor, there's tonnes of related info and simple modifications to wake your old motor up without EFI.

The following links are an example-

This last one is a great thread that Kim made up with all the info he's gathered, I'm actually going to pin it now that I think about it

Cheers and welcome to Just Commodores

Mate, at the end of the day, it all comes down to what u beleive, and TV can make people believe alot of bull**** at times. The ' hyclone' gadgets have been tested on dynos, and dont do enough to make it worth while and money ( 1-2 kw ).

If you realy want a C.A.I. for your carby VB - VK, get yourself some flexipipe, as seen on race cars for brake ducting etc.. On a street car, you can use plastic instaed od fibreglass or carbonfibre. This attatched to the end of the origianl snorkel on air cleaner cover, with the other end routed down below battery tray. Keeps it all out of sight, legal, and very effective ! When combined with a K&N air filter, of original design ( round like stocko ), and u have the basis for some extra fun.

Ok, now if your feeling REALY adventurous, go to www.crowcams.com.au , and look at there listing for basic cams for 202's. Crow is a wealth of knowledge for the wanting beginner. the the pros like Skaife, Bray, Stevens etc.
Anice subtle cam would be good for your bottom end, in conjunction with a new timeing gear set, and look out world !

Good Luck !!!

If you still have the standard carby, get the vh 2.85l wide mouth air filter housing. This will come with cold air ducting that will go under the battery tray and collect air from next to your headlight. Try some wreckers for this.
