i got myself a 10 bolt disc brake diff how can i tell if its a lsd without removing the cover also is there a way of finding out the gear ratio i got given the diff from a mate who is a wrecker and said its a 10 bolt v8 diff but i know nothing about them and would like to know exactly what i have before i waste my time putting it in also how do you even know its a 10 bolt diff just from looking sorry for the newb questions but i really know jack shit about diffs.
forgot to add its from a vk
To check if its an LSD turn one of the axles clockwise and see if the other side spins the same way- youll have to hold the part where the tailshaft bolts up still. if they spin the same direction its an LSD, if they spin opposite its not. But that method is not fool proof, the odd LSD will still spin in opposite directions but i highly doubt a 10 bolt is like that. it will spin in the same direction if its LSD.
You could mark the pinion and axle and count the amount of turns to one full turn but your better off just removing the cover and its written on the ring gear. You cannot harm anything pulling it off and you can just use a bit of slazo to seal it back up.
If you do decide to pull the cover off you can tell if its a ten bolt by counting the amount of bolts on the ring gear (obviously there will be 10), but if you don't a ten bolt is sort of an egg shape and an 8 bolt is more round and is smaller. Both have 10 bolts on the outer cover which is why some people confuse an 8 bolt for a 10 bolt. The outer cover bolts is not where the name comes from!
HERE IS A PIC OF WHAT A 10BOLT LOOKS LIKE
VK SL202 IS RIGHT EGG SHAPE

thanks for your replies yep its more egg shaped so it must be a 10 bolt.
get a mate to wedge a screwdriver between the studs of one axle, and you do the same on the other side.
try to turn the axles opposite directions. You shouldn't be able to turn them opposite directions if it's an LSD (not without considerable effort anyway) If they do turn you either have a stuffed LSD or an open centre.
a lot of 10 bolt Commodore diffs were LSD though, so there is a good chance it is an LSD if it's out of a Commmodore
The gear ratio should be stamped on the plate behind the diff yoke, might be a little bit tall of ratio(2.6) if it is going into a 6cyl.
To be 100% sure of the ratio, take the backing plate off the diff and rotate it gears untill you see the numbers stamped in the gears
