Had exact same issue in my VB, although the tail-lamp failure was intermittent. Check the bulb holders for corrosion, and check the wiring for condition. On mine, both these areas were shot, the right hand light had some bodgied up fix for some reason. Got good condition replacement from the wreckers for $10. Even if one side is shorting out, it can effect both sides for some reason, as I found out. The bulbs need proper bulb holders for proper earthing etc. hope this helps

+1 my left hand brake light and indicator werent working as the contacts where the wiring clip connects had rusted out. i wanted to fix it asap but the wreckers werent open today so i cut the wires before the clip, extended the wires with some new wiring and soldered them directly to the contact on the bulb on the side that hadnt rusted out. hey presto they work fine now
