    Default Holes in bonnets?

I was recently defected for "bonnet structure weakened by hole" (among other things). I'm just wondering wat the models which had the scoop done for a bonnet? If they had to be legal, how did they get around having a hole in the bonnet? Or didn't they have one?

I don't think there was a hole in the bonnet, the scoop was just for show - on the VH's anyway.

Fair enough. It must have been an option rarely taken up as I have never seen one, but there you go!

What a load of shit. Any falcon with a shaker, VN ss group A, VL SS Group A (walkinshaw version) all had the bonnet cut in exactly the same manner as supplied stock standard by Holden/Ford.

I had to cut a similar hole in my bonnet to fit the manifold.

the 'frame' you have cut is just the skin support (notice it's a lot thinner than the main bonnet supports) It's not the main bonnet frame
As correctly pointed out, the VL Walkinshaw had the same frame cut

If you had cut the main bonnet frame, then it would be a different story.
If you get too much grief, just attach/weld a couple of similar gauge support beams either side of the hole.

Thx guys. I might ring the guys at Regency and see wat they say, maybe they'll have no probs with it then.

Staggie, got done for the hole in the bonnet, Holley, surge tank in rear of wagon, aftermarket cam (check), 20" rims fitted, pressure line (fuel) gauge to be removed.

Bout the fuel line bit, he said the adjustable fuel reg had to go. If the motor makes enuf power to need one then it's not legal apparently. But from how he's worded it, it sounds like he means the fuel PSI gauge so will just remove that temporary. I think that's a load of bollocks too, will see wat the Regency guys say.

Got a 253 ready to drop in. Using VN heads on it (don't have to change my extractors then either) with a stock EFI cam, and also got a quaddy on top.

Not sure wat else they'll pick up on. I know it won't pass first shot tho...but I have heard of old banger Commodore's passing first shot so maybe it will. All the normal worn out stuff they look for (seatbelts, bushes, brakes, suspension) is all brand new still.

how did u get defected for the cam? did the cop have an emissions tester with him or just heard it idle and assumed it was cammed and wrote up a defect to suit?

since the emissions rules back in the vk days were not real strict u might have a chance at passing the sniffer test with a decent rotchester bolted on top, so long as the cam isnt too crazy

I'd be ringing regency and double checking it all, cant see how a fuel pressure gauge isnt legal, although where abouts is it?

Sounds like the cop sorta knew what he was on about, holley, 20's and surge tank is understandable.

Lol hurry up and get VN heads would ya! Apparently 150rwkw shouldn't be to hard to hit with VN heads on a 253. But won't aim that high with the stock cam.

The cop asked me wat cam was in it, I said stock, he had a giggle and put pen to paper lol.
The 253 has a stock EFI cam so I'm hoping it will pass easy.

Yeah I can't understand it being illegal either. It's mounted to the pressure reg, which is bolted to a bracket which is bolted on by one of the strut mount studs. It's on the driver side strut tower, ya can see it in the pic above.

give a local automotive engineer as call and make a time to go and see him to get it certified.

Ask the engineer what he wants to see to have it pass ADRs
Complete the work and return to him.

Other option is to delete the centre support completely inject some urathane where the cuts are to look like normal glue then paint the inside of the bonnet, done properly you wouldnt pick it from factory

Dunno if replying here is still relevant or if the issue got resolved but my mate's VK had a hole in the bonnet for his filter to stick through & he also had a scoop which just bolted/unbloted to the hood & the only reason he got defected for the hole was because it needs to have a solid rubber ring around the hold, as in, a big O ring, not just a straight bit from clark rubber bent around into an O, but that was a few years ago here in QLD
