I currenly have 3.08 diff gears in my VB and want some 3.45s or 3.55s for it instead. Does anyone know what cars I could get the gears from so they will fit my diff? Im not massively fussed about getting an LSD just yet so im just after the gears
What sort of diff do you have atm, Salisbury or Borg warner, 6 cylinder or 10 bolt V8 diff?

It would be a 10bolt v8 diff at guess id day a salisbury. The axle code is gu4. Its a vb sl, originally a 253 4spd
Its probably a v8, 8bolt salisbury. If it is get rid of it and get a vl 6cyl b/w diff(3.45 ratio).I wouldnt trust a 8 bolt salisbury i,ve had one lock up doing 80ks down the freeway and one lock up at around 30ks pulling up to a set of lights, with out much warning.
Mate, all i can say is good luck finding 3.55 gears for a 10 bolt Salisbury....I hunted for ages to find a set for mine! Mabye get a pic of the backing plate so we can see if it is a V8 Salisbury?
im 100% sure its a v8 salisbury. the car was a 253 4 speed from the factory, has the numbers for it
Factory 253 commodores usually have 8 bolt diff, not the usual V8 10 bolt diff. Is the diff cover round or egg/oval shape?

i got 4.11s![]()
Yeh, I thought 253's had the 8 bolt/6 cylinder diff. 10 bolts were 308 cars...
Mine is a factory SLE VB 253 and it has the 8 bolt just like a 6cyl and not the 10 bolt as you would expect with a 308.
All i know the older Salisbury diffs (VB-VK) are made by GMH

No Borg Warners diffs are called Borg Warners, because they're made by a company called Borg Warner and they are used by a lot of different manufacturers for a variety of different cars (Toyota Coronas, Holdens, Cortinas, Fords, Skylines, Pintaras etc). Not sure exactly why Salisburys are called Salisburys, but as SLENUT said the Holden Salisburys were made by GMH, especially for Holdens.

Edit: After reading that, "technically" a Borg Warner diff is a Salisbury type diff although they are mostly referred to as Borg Warners.
I thought so, just everyone referring to the early ones as salisbury diffs as if it was a brand confused me a little. Another name for that style of diff - when the bearing and gears are integral with the housing is call 'unitized' i think. And then when the diff will just unbolt, its called a 'Banjo' diff, right? Theres another name for that sort as well.
Wonder why GM stopped making their own diffs.
Anyone interested have this........Commodore complete V8 Salisbury 10 bolt disc brake diff recent new crown wheel and pinion 3.55 gears with spool poly main control arm bushes hand brake cable suit VB-VK $450 in Brisbane call 0422 822 546.
perhaps they were called salisbury diffs because they were made in salisbury, sa? just a thought lol.
anyway, my diff is oval shaped and very dirty! its 3.08 ratios. are diff gears between 8 bolt and 10 bolt interchangeable? probably a dumb question but im fair clueless. also, when changing diff gears on the salisburys do you have to change the pinion gear as well? i may be able to get some 3.55 diff gears for a 10 bolt salisbury cheap but i dont think they come with the pinion gear
without the pinion its useless
I tune the oldschool way fear on the passengers face and knuckle colour cant go wrong
tabbacco is still my favorite vegetable
ok thanks for that. well i know without a shadow of a doubt now that i have an 8 bolt diff unfortunately =(
Egg shape cover is a 10 bolt diff.
Thats a 10 bolt wagon diff
Thats both a 8 bolt diff and a 10 bolt diff

i counted the bolts and its only an 8 bolt, i could only see the bottom half of the diff and i counted 4 bolts
i thought the bolts refered to the number of bolts on the crown wheel. your not counting the housing bolts are you?
