I was going to write what to look for but honestly the list is huge, they go over pretty much anything.

Seeing as you are in VIC you pay to get it checked at a mechanic, then he will give you the list of what is wrong with it and you have 14 days to fix it and take it back for him to pass it.

From memory it was about $50 there 8-9 years ago, not sure how much it would cost now.

    Rust
any leaks from engine, trans, p/s or diff.
movement and cracks in rubbers eg. sway bar, control arms
    horn, lights, indicators, highbeams
loose parts in the engine bay
    scrappy looking wiring
and also they don't like unfilled speaker holes in the doors
thats all i can think of atm just make sure u give the under of the car a good clean before you go so there's no build up of grease and oil, then you should be okay

probably check your P/S rack they always tend to be leaky on vb-vk unfortunately
unless yours is a manual rack.

Shocky boots probably arent a fail, but the bump stops may be, my Vk had neither when i registered it in NSW without a worry.

from the looks of your car mate you shouldn't have any trouble let us know how it goes though.

a high pressure hose will work fine
    steam cleaning is better
even just wipe it all away with a rag and hose it down should be fine.

Just any oil leaks, balancer and bottom of bell housing especially because thats where they always leak. then check your extension housing seal on the transmission and your pinion seal on the diff.

They check lots of things, some testers are ok others go overboard, but a few things that have not been mentioned on this thread yet...

Brakes - Rotor thickness and condition of pads and hydraulics.
Safety belts - freyed edges etc.
Windscreen for chips and scratches, condition of wipers.
    Pedal rubbers.
Lights/horn/indicators and that the indicators self cancel.
    Tyres.
Modifications, lowering, different wheels if either are excessivly over done.
    Exhaust - Noise level.
    Door locks/Window winders all work.
    Dash lights/ speedo working.
    Rear vision mirrors not damaged.
    Handbake holding.
Auto trans park working and not being able to be started in gear.
Seats securely mounted ie not loose.
Window tint if the car has it.
Bonnet catch holding when bonnet popped.
    Faded taillights/indicators.

Probably a lot more but a few things to check before you go. My sons have gone to some RWC places and they have done a very basic safety check, they have gone to others who have been buggers and picked the car to pieces. One we used but never went back to wanted a new petrol cap as he reckoned it was not venting properly.

Mine passed with ####ed shocks, shock boots, p/s leak, broken seat belt.. Etc etc
It's really who u get to do it..
Put some 14s or 15s on with good rubber. Chek Ur brake disks and pads
    Widscreen glass!!!
    All your lights work
Give Ur whole car a good clean before u take it in too.
And don't spray degreaser around the dizY.
