no flap in the boot. you will need to climb under the car. there is a circluar opening on the front face of the tank which your fuel line comes out of. that circular opening needs to be tapped anti-clockwise with a blade screw driver to unscrew it and the sender comes out complete attached to that plate.
(if its the same as a V8)
looking for pics now
this is the only pic i have which is hosted. yours will be different because there will be a return line, but i cant imagine it being that different. (willing to be corrected)

nah you don't have to pull the tank out, but you will need to drain most of the fuel out or you'll wear it when you pull the sender out
although it can make it easier if you drop the panhard rod
EFI tank has just got six 8mm head bolts in it. comes out really easy. You have to twist it clock wise to get the pickup out of the swirl pot.
And i dont know if the pickup from VN vp ect will fit but the actual level sender will work if you can just swap them over, but the later sender will read correct full but will show empty a little earlier as the ohms output is slightly different when empty but the same when full, cant remember excatly but its within 5-10 ohms so its not a real problem.
my guess would be that its not your sender at fault, itll be your float. if your guage is moving all around the joint, then it most likely will be the float just bobbing up and down cos' the sender seems to be doing its job.
my 2c anyway.
no like it doesnt float.
itll choose a spot (usually qtr tank) and sit there.. half is full
empty is quart.. i think i dunno
ahah
but id rather have it fixed,
and i would just get a 2" gauge but i already have a temp 1 and i dont want another hahah.
sender pivot is probably rusted to hell, only way to find out is pull it out and have a look and see how freely it moves.
