Im chris im new to the forum, i got a 1985 Vk Calais efi a few days ago and it wont start as there is no power going to the injectors or dash, im thnking it mayb that the computer is blown from the last owners connecting the battery around the wrong way or them trying to jump start it, where is the computer located and how do i test if its blown or not?
Well it's located behind the front left kick panel. But wouldn't have a clue how to check if it's blown. Have ya checked all ya fuses? Do you have power to anything?
Thanks for that ill have a look for it now, yer i have. everythng ells is workn we had it running last night on BBQ gas 4 a bit just to see how it runns and if its worth getting it bak on the road.
Found it but not sure how to test if its blown or not. once i reconnected it with all the crap on the earth removed i cranked it ovr and as it was crankng i bummped the gear stick and put it from N to D now it wont cvrank over and all lights are now really dim and some thngs like door lock and elec windows and mirrors wont work. what do u thnks is wrong now?
Charge the battery?
I only took it off the charger about 2hrs ago after it had been on charge all night long, and i only cranked it over 3 times for like 45sec at a time it should b nearly fully charged still!. i dont get how the car lost so much power so suddenly cound i have blown somethng from putting it from N to D while the engine was turning over?
I flattened mine in 4 cranks, you know it chews alot of power to crank over the engine, chuck it on charge again, you may be surprised. Thats my two cents anyways.
Could be the neutral safety switch playing funny buggers too
Its rare they break tho. But you could always drag it right back, then slam it back into park.
Thanx i now have no power to the fuse's why would this be?
I have now put it bak on charge, i will try and slam it into park now
By slam, all i mean is drag it to first, then slide it back up to park.
The battery could be stuffed in which case no amount of charging will bring it back to life for any length of time. It also sounds as though you may have an earth leak - as Staggie said your inhibitor switch / neutral start switch could be playing up (they do that) and that could also be the source of an earth leak.
evry thing is bak the way it was now except the injectors and dash still dont have power getting to them. i pulled off the tape from around the wires comming from the efi and there has been some reall dodgy wiring going on, the brown wire is now connected to about 3 other wires with 3 wires comming off it without that insulation around it. does any one no why this has been done could it be because they have tryed to hook up an emobiliser or could it b somethng to do with the alarm it has but i followed the wires down and they have nothing to do with the alarm.
Yea def sounds like the battery ain't the best. And yea does sound like a bad earth. Pain in the arse lol. I'd start with the nutural start switch. Try having the gearbox in nutural rather then park.
im really getting pissed off now i cant find any wiring diagrams that tell me what the brown wire and the wires its attatched to are for. its turning over now and makes spark but the injectors still have no power to them thinking that the efi box could be rooted from that retarded wiring job
Could be time to head to the auto elec...
Do you have a max ellarys workshop manual by any chance? Full colour wiring diagrams for the efi vk system! Works a treat.
A gift for you.
no i was thinking of going into town to get a workshop manual from auto barn or super cheep but thnk i hav it all sorted out i now. i found out that the gas/petrol switch needed a positive wire from the battery for the gas valve and the petrol soledoid things to work and i also now have power to the injectors tho i have not had the car running yet.
If u need any diagrams let me know, have the proper Holden manual
Just a thought, wouldnt be the tach relay that's had the dick would it??
Only brown wires in the efi system are for tacho signal and to negative according to this.
Really don't think the brown wire is ur prob, or u wouldn't have spark.

Try another battery in it, that's my suggestion, I had a similar problem in my berlina, wouldn't start, would turn over but that was it, swapped batteries and all was good.
Sorry for all the posts, just doin em as things comes to mind.
ill see how i go 2morrow now that its got power to the injectors and gas system
yer not sure about the tach relay and should i have the dash hooked up to start it cuz im pree sure that the computer uses the tacho off it to run propperly yer i thnk they have done what they did to the brown wire for the gas/fuel switch
ill get one of the new batterys out of the boat and hook it up and see what happens tho when i had another play around i didnt feel the injectors click. thanks 4 ur help
