so despite saying i would never own another commodore it seems that i am failing.
mate found a mint VC SL and snached it up now he doesn't want it so im thinking of getting it for a daily.
anything i should be looking out for?
where do they rust?
front screens. gotta stick your head in where the bonnet hinge is. there is a little escape hole in there and sometimes gets plugged up with dirt, so it rusts.
rear window. look around the seal on the outside at the top.
rear parcel shelf. open the boot, stick your head in under the shelf and have a look. if you can see rust under there then chances are the rear window seal is Fergerked.
and the normal areas, bottom 2 corners of each door (front and rear) quarter panel where the wheel arch meets 1/4. sills, and wherever else you can think of
edit* i have noticed a lot of early girls rust in the very front of the bonnet too. the corner where the bonnet meets the headlights. the only real ay of noticing is sticking your head in the engine bay backwards and looking at the 'rim' of the bonnet.
sills are fairly notorious for rust, as is the r/h/r guard, back corner (mud gets caught up behind the fuel filler neck cover and the bottom corner of the gaurd)
also open the fuel flap and check inside for rust
also check the boot floor, particularly around the spare wheel well area. the first gen commodores rust here like mad. my vb is fine but 99% of the vb-vls i have looked at (admittedly im referring to ones at the wreckers where you pick bits of them yourselves) where rusted through the well and you could see the ground underneath
