Default Help with my 304 conversion to VK

Ok so I got a VQ Statesman to get the motor and box out of for my VK 6 to 8 conversion. Now what exactly can I use from this car?

So far I know I can use...

    Motor (Injected 304)
    Box (T700)
    Brakes

    What I can't use...

    Exhaust
    Suspension?
Diff (IRS) (is the LSD centre able to be put into my VK diff? If so will it be as strong as a V8 diff)

I'm usure whether I can use...

    Extractors
    K-Frame

What else can be used and what needs to be changed?? Also is it worth getting a wiring loom made for a conversion like this or just using the Statesman loom. Being a EFI 202 I was told that I can use the same fuel tank, is this correct? From what I've been told its easier going from EFI to EFI just swap the ECU etc? Last thing how easy is it to have the power windows, electronic dash and sensors (coolant, oil etc) working with the new setup. Also heard there is a bit of screwing around with the tailshaft?

Hey, mate. Doing a similar conversion into my VH, I used the K-frame out of the 5L (apparently it gives alot more clearance for the headers) and Im just going to have a go at using my headers, suposed to be a really tight fit.

Thanks for the advice vkberlina. Had a look at the site and its pretty impressive. I've read right over it and worked out alot of what we can and can't do.

I still have a few questions...

You used the PH5700 extractors but will mine fit that are in the VQ now. Previous owner said they're off a VN.

Will the VQ brakes fit my VK, if so will my rims still fit?

You said you had the Salisbury 10 bolt 5 litre diff and this all joined up to the modified tailshaft. Will I have any problems considering I only have the 6cyl Salisbury?

I noticed you modified the radiator to have a straight top pipe. Will I have to do this too? I've spoken to alot of people and they reckon there is a work-around?

Thanks alot for your time mate I really appreciate it. I'm also sorry to keep pestering and asking annoying questions.

I'd upgrade the diff mate the 6cyl sals will likely go bang if you give it too much stick.

buy a VL borgwarner or a v8 disc Salisbury, a 6 cyl Salisbury will die in the ass pretty fast.

Guessing the VQ was an IRS diff since i've never seen a live axle VQ, then no you can't use it, a live axle VN-VS diff will fit but you wont be able to fit the sigs on most likely cause the diff's wider, better off with a VL borgwarner 3.45 diff

VQ front brakes should bolt on but your better off spending 700 for the complete VT conversion for the front and getting 1" master cylinder.

I get my brakes off these guys, never had any issues yet, i've brought off em a few times and always pick it up from there factory.

VT COMMODORE BIG BRAKE CONVERSION VB VC VH VK VL VN VP | eBay

Then just ebay for a 1" master

The work around for the radiator hoses is special hoses with a spring through the inside, you can bend em and flex em but they retain shape so i doesn't hamper the flow, bursons sell em.

Instead of buggering around doing the master cylinder as well, just get the VE spec brake upgrade, no need to change the master cylinder. I do the kits fo the VK for $795, comes with special slotted rotors, calipers, lines, hubs, pads and even brake fluid.

I'll hold you to this when I get to doing the brakes. Probably a stupid question but will I have any issues fitting my rims with these newer brakes? Cheers

what brand/make/model & size are the rims?

15" steel rims just fit over the 300mm VZ setups my alloy 16" simmons just fit over.

it depends on the rim as well, I couldnt get my 16" simmons over 330mm brakes I bought for my VK I ended up removing the brackets and machining the discs down to make them 300mm

Yes, as said, it depends on the rims. I have had issues with 16" VY stockies over the 298mm on a VN.
