hey guys, i have a clutch fan to put in my vk, but im baffled as to how i get the vk fan out, the shroud looks impossible to get out unless the fan is out, and i cant even take the radiator out because the shroud is attached to it....
any ideas?
loosen off the alternator and loosen off the fan belt. reach in between the fan and shroud and undo the 4 1/2 bolts attaching the fan to the water pump. use two spanners, crack each bolt (i.e. loosen them) first then use one spanner to hold the pump still while the other spanner undoes each bolt. the last one shouldnt be that tight because you have cracked it, so holding the fan by hand should do the trick.
the shroud has two or three screws in the top and the bottom kinda clips on. there is a little gap in the base that'll unclip and allow the shroud to pass over the pump. then its a case of wriggling both the fan and shroud out at kinda the same time.
taking the two metal clips off the radiator, lifting it out of its base and leaning the base further forwards can help too. but it wont move far with the hoses attached.
NB. i havent done this for ages cos' i went thermo fans, so i may have my facts a bit wrong.
on a six its a prick of an idea, V8s are a little better they all have the bigger fan which comes out easier. You have to undo the two little screws at the top holding the shroud on the push it back as far as possible, get your hand down in the gap and undo the fan bolts, or remove radiator after dropping the shroud. its possible.
