the vh commodores had a power steering pump which had the reservoir built into it, and the vk have a separate pump to the reservoir, but i was looking on ebay and they have the same power steering pumps as the vh for a vk 6 cyl, my question is, can i convert to the vh type that has the reservoir built into the pump? since i have a vh that im wrecking with the older style power steering, im wondering if i can just switch them over, since my vk new style is busted.
cheers
I thought the VH & VK 6cyl pumps were the same and then changed when the RB30 was introduced in the VL.
Could be wrong..
The VK 6 have a separate reservoir and V8s have a single unit. Most earlier holdens had the single unit, i dont know where the 6 cyl switched to the separate, me thinks the VH may have been the first to use a separate reservoir as they probably ran out of room with all the stuff running off the fan belts, single units are right up top where as the reservoir type have the pump right at the bottom driving directly off the balancer. At least the VH 202 i have has a vk style PS pump on it, might be used when the car has air con or something.
The VK system could have been retrofitted to the VH sometime to resolve a powersteer problem, to the best of my knowledge the VK 6 was the first to have separate resovoir.
I think it would be easy to fit the VK system to a VH, you will need a pully for the crank shaft, im not familiar with accessory placement is on the VH6 so you may find things get int he way like alternators, aircon pumps etc.

Well now I know Whr my power steering came from . A VK. thx mine is the same and I thought some1 put a afta market system in.
The power steering pumps with the separate reservoir were fitted to the VH 6cylinder (2.85) motors that had the air pump going into the exhaust ports. The same system was used in the all the VK 6 cylinders, both carby and EFI engines.
Hey ARI ive got another two pumps other then that one from my vk and i think a spare reservoir off another VK if your interested.
yeah maybe, (sorry to thread heist OP) the impala one has crapped out (not bad for a 40 year old unit) and i HATE the fill point. its right down the bottom of the engine, behind the alternator, so you can forget filling it while the engine is running. just looking into options atm.
the pala is very similar to my VK pump, so if the VK with the remote resevior would work on a VK 8, then we may have a winner-winner-chicken dinner
I have a feeling that the 6 pump would require some modification of the mounting to work on an 8, ill have to have a look at it next time im in the shed.
the mounts i can easily fabricate. im more worried about pressures and the like. of which i have no clue about.
Good point, steering was lighter in the 6 compared to the 8 was always going to be though, as for assistance the 6cyl pump seems to be about the same as the v8 one if you look at the pump body. God knows what size the internals are :/
