hey guys, First post so here goes,
having some trouble with my vh,
bought car with already a clarion dvd headunit installed. Headunit wiring was dodgy so I (with the help of old man, mechanic by trade) rewired headunit,
also installed amp and upgraded speakers, but my battery keeps going flat overnight,
At first i thought the amp may of been draining power but after disconnecting power to the amp the same thing happened,
The only thing i can thing of is that something to do with the ignition that there wasnt an existing accessories wire running to the headunit, so it is temporarily hooked up to where the full time power is coming from giving the headunit full time power.
is this causing my battery to flatten overnight?
thanks ,
any advice is welcome.
i pretty much have the same problem but my accesories works but iv yet gotta test my alternator its a 30 yo alternator so i think by now mine needs replacing Maby you could make an accessories from the acc wirer at the ignition barrel
this is gonna sound odd. but are you turning your key to "off" or are you going one click too far? when the barrels wear out they can go backwards an extra click which turns on the pink 'on' wire. so stuff like your temp guage/fuel guage etc will still be switched on.
i dunno, stab in the dark.
you've checked the boot light isn't staying on.
set you multi meter to amps lift a battery terminal and connect meter in series in the circuit observing polarity and measure how much current is being drawn at no load (key off) dont turn the key on with the multi meter connected this way.
once you have measured how much current is being drawn with the key off start start pulling fuses to find out what it is. and the amount should give you an idea what it might be.
still think jays first post is on the money the head units staying powered up?
does it happen if you disconnect the radio for the night?
after reading this again the radio should be switched with the ignition so only the memory wire stays on all the time in most cases .
thanks guys,
ive got nothing when ignition is set to accessoires, only when in the on position,
ill play with the barrel on the weekend i think,
Hi mate before you go and pull barrels out it could be a simple thing as your battery is on its way out if your battery is stuffed a simple thing like clock can drain your battery overnight...if your ol man is a mechanic he should have a battery charger...see if it charges if the battery is ok...then back track if you suspect the stereo or the amp then disconnect them from the main power and accessories wires to the battery and the same with the power wires to the amp....if your battery stays on charge over night then you know the wiring for amp and stereo is incorrectly wired make sure both amp and stereo are wired so you can only use them with the ignition on accessories.
