hai guise, i have a vh sle with a 253 and ive purchased some genie extractors off feebay, and i want to know what size piping to put for the exhaust, i want duel piping, im thinking maybe 2" each? engine is stock as a rock, although im thinking about a lumpy cam in the future, but that would be it.
opinions? what would sound the best?
also what am i expecting to pay for a duel exhaust with 1 muffler on the back?
cheers
I think ya should put stock cast headers back on it, keep it original.![]()

mainly the reason i dont want the stock ones is because the left header has that stupid flap inside that could be jammed shut.
Twin 2.25" should suffice, get some decent mufflers.
what size are the headers? primaries & end
see attached 3 common designs for V8s delete cats for your setup.
Either 2" or 2 1/4" would be fine depends on what you plan to do down the track and where you want power & how loud or quiet you want it to be
You will get better performance out of a X-pipe setup as it aids in balencing out the high and low pressure periods. If you look at the firing order you will see there are 2 overlapping exhaust pulses on one side, this is what creates the low pressure situations so to stop this a H or X piece is put into the exhaust to link the two banks, this will help extract the gasses out of the double fire.
If your running a full on tuned pipe setup position can be calculated to work more efficently if your chasing every kw or ounce of torque else just make sure its infront of the first muffler or it wont work.
It will also take a little of the crackle out of the exhaust note, make idle a little quieter and lessen the blub blub blub noise a bit but you will get power gains

Rather tri Ys than 4 into 1 style headers. Use those with option 3, bout 2 1/4 inch.

great advice guys!
in other news, i just got off the phone to an exhaust place. and for a duel 2 inch system not inc extractors (im supplying my own) he quotes 840 ish.
the weird thing is he says the single 2.5 inch system sounds and performs better, which he quoted me 340 supply and install.
he said the duel 2" system with just a rear muffler will sound crap :S
what do you guys think?
Twin into single sounds great. Although mine has single muffler. Be a bit meater duels, two mufflers then into a single.

id also like to note that im after it on the loud side, i expect to be over the legal limit since this isnt a daily.
cool story.
in other news, i picked up a twin into single (joins just before the diff section i think) 2.5" system tonight. its in sections so all i have to do is weld her up! saved about 400 bucks! the system is a burkley or something. see how we go with that.
thanks for the advice guys!
I had a berklee box on my old VB 253....sounded like shit. Was tempting to put the old box back on that had a big ass hole in it!
On our dirt circuit car, when we start it at night we sit the berklee box on one pipe and a lukey race box on the other (just to quieten it down for the neighbours) and the lukey sounds alot nicer then the berklee....more rumble, more quality crackle (not kicked out a muffler sort of crackle).

I run the 3rd config on my VK with 2 1/4" into a single 3", sounds great, comes in at 96db@3000rpm, its a little on the loud side, im running the biggest hotdog we could fit at the back, if it was a daily I would try and quieten it up a bit but being drivingso rarely now im not worried.

Tri Y's are the only extractors available for pre VT anyway so you are limited there.
Single 2 1/4" is better on a 253. I agree with DANNY8, Berklee sound like crap.
just the rear muffler is a berkley, so if it sounds crap ill change it over to something better
I had config 1 with on my old manual VH 253, 2 1/4" into 3" with just the one Lukey centre muffler - don't know what the DB was but it was loud. It did make that sh*ty 253 sound pretty hot tho!
253s do have a deeper sounding note over the 308s. my neighbour has 253 and i have 308. both same exhaust and sat side by side his is a lot deeper note.
my old vk that i had before i got rid of it... It had genie extractors 2 1/4" straight through muffler and a turbo muffler with the tip dump. size 2 1/4" right threw. It wasn't that loud it had a nice humm at 100 km/h.

I'm planning on doing my exhaust system soon when I finally get a motor, box and diff together, can I ask why (vkberlina) the pictures you showed up top show cats in the design? If its a stock 253 with no injection he wouldn't have to run them would he? Unless I'm missing something here?
Just pretend the cats are straight pipes, im assuming they are from his plans for the 304.
