hey im thinking about getting a VC commodore
what are some of the things i should look for when buying one ?
any help will do
These days 98% of older Commodores are gonna have a few problems unless ya spend up big on one which has had a resto.
If ya don't wanna spend much on it afterwards, take it for a spin and make sure everything works and it drives good. Obviously rust is a big one to look out for, and also dodgy panel repairs for signs of it being in a prang and not professionaly fixed. I've seen a VL which had welds going from one side to the other just in front of the engine mounts, through the chassis rails, inner gaurds, the lot! They had just cut the front off and welded another one on....if ya spot sumfin like that you'd prolly wanna leave it where it is.
When I look at buying an older Commodore the only thing I'm really concerned about is how straight it is, how good the paint is and how much rust it has. Everything else I can easily fix. It's just if I spot sumfin not right I use that to try and get the price down lol. For someone not as mechanically minded or someone with less time, you'd prolly wanna get one with less work needed.

Depending on which way your going but Id be looking at originality and if the car hasn't been tampered with too badly. A lot of Commodores got modified by young blokes in the 90s however in saying that there are still a good number of original Commodores getting around. My advice to you is probably a little bias as Im a stickler for originality, I look for mud flaps and all!! lol..
John, problem going for that original factory look is looking and the cost of parts. Very hard and expensive to buy.
To the original OP, be very wary with low Ks, the trip meter maybe stuffed, common problem. There is the odd rare real deal out there.
Best to find out what sort of VC your looking at.

should we do this again? i think so, its been a while....
so i cant say 100% for VC's but for VH-VK's you need to look here:
a little bit here:
ends up looking like this:
thats the rear winow. the best way to check it is to stick your head up under the boot/parcel shelf. if there is a teensie spot of rust under, then there will be bagloads in the window seal
another spot is behind the bumperbar on the floor where it meets the back panel. if the boot seal is leaking (which 98% of them do) then itll collect water in this point:
often the floor of the boot and the spare wheel well will have rust patches:
then you have the bases of the drivers/passengers/front/rear doors (which goes same as every other car on the market) but i do not have pics of that, soz.
then you have the front windscreen scuttle panel, which will look like this if un attended to:
all of which is easy to repair... sort of... ok its not.
Yet to see a VB or VC go like that!!!!

that sir is over priced! reason why we pay so much for older cars here now is people think it older its worth a mint when they arent but some chump always out there to pay that money and drive the prices up.

yeah the VK at the wrecker i cut the rear windcreen scuttle off was MINT. not a spot of rust anywhere and LV2 304 (seemed a shame to take a hacksaw to it, but meh). so they are out there for cheap. no need to overdo it![]()
