hey guys i have a vk sl with an injected 5 litre in it the guy i brought the car off had it installed with the turbo 350 and i need to get the engine engineered and need to up grade the brakes but also want to beef up the diff problem the guy said he had upgraded the front brakes to vn ss brakes but the back has disc brake not drum so my question is
what diff do i have? sailsbury vn diff vl turbo how standard vl how would i know ??
how do i work out what diff it is ??
how do i know what brakes are on the front and back ??
do certain diffs have markings on them so you can tell them apart
do certain brakes have markings on them
Rear disc brakes are all the same up to VS. With the fronts, they are the same VB-early VP, there were a few exceptions, VL V8 and turbo, VN FE2 suspension and V8. VP was a weird one, there were 4 different rotors for the fronts of those.
The easy way to tell what you have is to look at the caliper, if it has fins on it, it will be VN V8. The other way to tell is to measure the diameter of the rotor, 271mm is standard, 289mm is VN V8 and FE2.
With the diff, measuring the width is the easiest way, the ratios are all different too depending which model it is out of. I'm not sure of the exact measurement, but the VL is 12mm wider than VB-VK, and VN is 40mm wider than the VL. The diff should be Borg Warner if it is a VN, the Salsbury was VK V8. Look on the snout of the diff, it will BW cast into it if it is a Borg Warner.
so the back would be easiest to tell as you said they are all the same the guy mentioned it hade 308 ratios i think so that might help if it is a vn diff wouldnt he have to cut it down to fit .. or could he of just bolted it up a nd flogged it off to me ??
today i got under the car and on the diff plug there is a red tag off it saying limited slip diff use gm lubricants and the diff measusres 1117mm from the metal that hangs down and connects to chassis does that help determine what diff i have ?? it's from out side to out side
What does the rear cover look like? Oval shape?

what does the uni yoke look?
if the rear unis held on by u-bolts it will be a salisbury type diff.
Measure from the inside of the flange that the backing plate bolts to. Found some measurements, VB-VK 1518, VL 1530, VN 1570. If it is an LSD 3.08:1 then it would be either VL or VN.
