Default Good spark, fueling but no go...

    Hi people

I've just replaced the drive on the end of the distributor to get my rotor arm spinning again after that died (see rotor arm issues).

All is good there, all plugs are sparking well and are wet with fuel but she just won't fire. I've double checked that I have the dibby in correctly (TDC in position, rotor arm pointing to plug 1 etc etc), all leads reattached and like I say she's sparking well at all plugs and I can smell fuel.

She won't even run rough. I've flattened the battery once trying, recharged it and flattened it again. I'm now wondering whether the battery is also an issue. She'll turn over for about 5 seconds nicely but then the starter motor stops. I'm guessing that the battery is a bit weak too. Would using jumper leads from another car possibly give me the extra I need? I don't want to buy another battery if I don't have to...

Any suggestions anyone? It's really starting to do my head in!

Think I'm all good with the dizzy - I've checked and double checked and rotor arm is pointing at plug 1 when it's TDC and I stuffed some paper in the plug hole and cranked until it shot out so I know I'm on the upward stroke.

However I've just pulled all the plugs out after cranking the ignition for a minute or so. 3 and 4 are as wet as with fuel but 1 and 2 are bone dry which is weird...

Why would this be? Any ideas?

I'm getting close to calling in mobile mechanic which goes against all my principles but it's got me stumped and I'm starting to get well pissed off!

Plugs are fouling due to flooding from too much cranking me thinks..... Definately something up with your dizzy, Not being sarcastic but are all the leads on the correct way?

I can understand why 3 and 4 are flooded - too much cranking for sure but confused as to why 1 and 2 are bone dry (not a whiff of fuel) - wouldn't they all be really wet?

I'm pretty sure that the leads are on correctly - can someone point me in the direction of a plan just to make sure I'm not being an idiot (which is quite possible!) Looking down on the dibby cap I have bottom left (1), bottom right (2), top left (3) and top right (4) - all plug sparking nicely when I take them out to test them.

Good spark, fueling but no go...-firing.jpgrotor spins clock wise. firing order is 153624 you can put number one whereever you want, as long as the rest of the leads follow suit and 1 is on the correct stroke.

the carby is in the middle of the manifold yes? and 1 and 2 are further away. might be a case of fuel isnt able to get that far. dunno. just throwing it out there.

I realise you said that you have put paper in and seen it shoot out, but I would check you are definetely on the compression stroke for number one cylinder and not the exhaust stroke, get some one to help you and see if you can turn the motor over by hand, take all the plugs out it will make it easier and press your thumb against the spark plug hole of number one and you will feel the compression pressure against your thumb when it is coming up on its compression stroke, then line up the timing marks on the crank pulley and then see what segment in the dissy cap the rotor button is pointing to, it sounds like your timing is out, if it is not pointing to number one lift the dissy out and re position it so that it is.

Does your carby have a anti dieseling solenoid?Might be it's not connected. If it's a varajet like on the black 6s.If it has one then you can test it by switching ignition on and then touching the solenoid and removing and should hear a click.Just a thought.

Do you have any backfiring? When I say backfiring I mean it's loud enough to make all the dogs in your neighbourhood start barking.I found out the hard way but when I saw a flame shoot out from the carb(varajet) I knew something was bad,so when I pulled the carb apart the plunger had disintigrated.Try using a timing light when you crank it over.
