just wondering if anyone has tryed HIDs in the old cars i was thinking of putting some HIDs in but not sure might just mount some lights behind the grill
You'll probably end up melting the lenses. Plus make the car look shit.

with the design of the early headlight i reckon the beam would be allover the place and blind on coming traffic.
New headlights and blnkers cost me $90 and with good quality globes perform quiet well just make sure you adjust them properly.

cos' lights get vigorously tested to make sure they are not too bright and able to be aimed correctly.
HID's also (as rick mentioned) have a nasty habbit of melting things, and the entire case of standard headlights is made of plastic, so i would guess that would be the first to go.
you would have to rewire your lights to run HID's anyway, cos' they need a feed directly from the battery + and - so why not just rewire your existing lights with a relay for each one. if i remember correctly, you have already pulled your lights apart and thoroughly cleaned inside, so i think you will be surprised at how good a direct + supply will make them.
then once you have a good power supply, you can try higher wattage H4's.
Bahaha run hotter oh jeeze. So much misinformation in this thread. As said pick up some new headlights if you can then run some decent globes. Will make a world of difference.

I got an original good used pair of headlight assembly's from a wrecker and put 100/80w H4's in my previous VH, cleaned up the connections and made sure the wiring was sound. The headlights turned out great, nice and bright. If you do 100/80w H4's though you will need to put in a relay so you don't burn out the switch.
I was recommended some type of phillips globes recently by an auto elec where they produce a very white and bright beam of light but draw much less power than the standard H4's - I put them in the SL/E and was very impressed. I can't remember the name right now but if I get a chance over the weekend I will try and dig out the box they came in and let you know.

Thanks guys for the info I might just do as derekp said run higher wattage bulbs
Had a quick search on the net - pretty sure these are the ones.

Don't run a higher wattage bulb it's not as easy as oh wire in a relay away you go. There's more current drain on the wire for a start = heat = potential fire = oh shi. Better off getting some Phillips Xtreme Vision +80's. Nice crisp white light.

You said rewire you didn't say upgrade so I misread your post.

the headlights in the early girls were actually very good when the cars were new 30 years ago. But unfortunately Holden was tight arsed and didn't fit relays to the headlight circuit like later models. So as the wiring and switches got some age on them, resistance increased, less power to the headlights hence dull headlights.
simply fitting relays & retaining standard wattage light bulbs makes a HUGE difference.
So first thing I'd do as Ari suggested, is fit relays. If you fit high wattage headlight bulbs to the existing setup, it's just going to end up melting wires
Can someone post a link to these "relays" you keep referring to? - Will be doing this VERY soon!

gereric 4 post relay:
available from pretty much anywhere. service stations, supercheap auto, repco, burson etc etc.
not tricky to wire up, i just havnt got time to make a circuit diagram right now.
