Default Lowered King Springs on a VH Commodore, who's used them?

    Hi All,

I'm wondering if anyone has used the Lowered King Springs in there commodore. I've got a VH Commodore and wanting a fairly aggressive stance and was thinking of opting for purchasing the Ultra Low springs for the rear and standard heights on the front. The difference as I'm told is approximately 70mm at the rear and the standards are about 10mm higher then the car left the factory..

Has anyone used these and if so did you like the stance?

Thats not aggressive, dropped in arse looks plain stupid. It needs to be high at the back and low at the front, muscle car style.

finally some that knows how an 80's car should sit! slight rake towards the front with fat 14-15" wheels. none of this towing of the invisible caravan shit.

My experience tells me its a shit idea it will handle like shit and use more fuel and look like a clown mobile. Now if you where to go super low all round or even ultra low all round thats cool or even super front ultra rear. i had super all round on my vh and it was to high. but with good shocks and sway bars handled very well.

Mate. King springs are a good product. No issues there.
70mm lower at the back would be good for spotting possums at night.

go to King Springs website, if they are like most spring manufacturers they should give you an 'eyebrow height' (centre of the rim to the bottom edge of the gaurd)

    happy caravaning

Yes I have got em all round and it's an inch lower. It might not sound like much but believe me it is plenty (also legal).Apart from looking good I have much better stability on the road. You will need to remove the spacers on the centre bearing assembly or you will end up with a vibration.Whatever you do NEVER oxy or angle grind them as I have seen the damage that this can do.When I did mine I went the whole hog and replaced strut inserts (gas) strut bearings and gas rear shocks. It was all money well spent.

this interests me. there are spacers? it makes sense. i have a MAD tailshaft vibration, which started when i changed the diff. but have never noticed any spacers on the tailshaft. how big/small are they?

Yea I didn't even know they had them either until I saw a posting on here about them. They are on the centre bearing bracket/chassis hookup. You only need to remove them if you are lowering vehicle otherwise leave them on.

I have Kings std low all round on my Vk with 17's. Always thought the ride was harsh, but firm. I put it down to the rims and tyres.

I just bought a VB factory 8 with Pedders all round and put my 17's on it. Ride is smooth as, no grimacing on the rough stuff.

To me, it wasn't the 17's after all. Go figure.

if you can't find them, then someone has probably removed them

sometimes the spacers (approx 5mm thick washer) are fit between the centre support mount and the floor pan bolts, others are mounted between the centre support mount and the centre support hanger/ring, and sometimes they are just removed. It's all about getting driveline angles correct ie angles A,B & C. At the dealer, we used to have an inclinometer that we measured the driveline angles with with problem cars. We used to move or remove the shims, sometimes had to fit longer lower control arms (were available from Holden) to get the diff pinion to centre support angle correct and/or shim the back of the gearbox up or down to get it right.

I fit my spacers between the centre support mount and the centre support hanger/ring to get my angles right. Used to vibrate under acceleration from a standing start. Vibration is gone now.

how would a backyard hack like myself go about determining if the angles are right?

    measure exit from trans
measure shaft entry to center bearing
    measure tailshaft yolk

    ?

70mm lower in the rear- you would really need to fit adjustable upper arms to get the pinion angle back to something normal.

Ari, have a talk to whiteline, they sell adjustable upper control arms a good suspension place can set them up for you.

    trial and error
just try shimming the tailshaft up first and see if it makes the vibration better or worse.
if no or little difference, then try dropping or raising the back of the gearbox with shims

PAge 04-25 of the GMH Service manual (for VB) has a diagram of the angles and the points at which they should be measured. It shows you three graphs of joint angles. The three graphs refer to three different types of Differentials (small salisbury L6 and V8, and large salisbury).

It says to measure from the "underside of the rear fender opening" to the axle centreline. You take that distance and check it on the graph and it tells you what the angles should be!

It doesn't tell you what you need to actually do the measurements on a real car though... You would need a couple of straight edges and a protractor or something I guess!
