G'Day All,
I have an 85' VK with a 202 Black, running a Varajet II Carby. Recently (say 2 weeks back) I started to get big problems with the timing an general operation of the car; and I ended up diagnosing that it was the EST dizzy; so in light of that I installed an after market Electronic Dizzy (a remake an old bosch design; probably a after market VH design; in order to scrap the EST). And a Bosch MEC 718 ignition Coil. I am going to be adding new leads and spark plugs when the leads arrive in the mail next week.
Upon finished installation and a quite basic timing adjustment and a test drive; the car ran smoothly; and appeared to be on idle and seemed to drive as good as it ever has been, if not better. However there was one factor that stumped me; in regards to the dizzy; which fits and is designed for a 202 (black, blue and red)and also a few of the older Holden engines, it has a vacuum advance port on the side (round metal plate thing with a metal hose point sticking off of it); and I have nothing to connect to it. I've checked again and again and there appears to no hoses or ports that would connect or suit the connection.
I understand that the basic operation of this port is to increase the timing upon acceleration; but how important is it to a 202? (probably a dumb question)and if it needs to be connected how do I do it? Though an engine mod?
Any assistance on this matter would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks Heaps,
Brendan
Since all your spark advance with EST was control by the ECU ( under kick panel - passenger side) the Varajet carb on this model does not have a ported vacuum outlet to engage the vac advance unit. The VH carb would have.
When I did this upgrade to my VK, I had my local mechanic drill the port out (on the carb) and place a tube in it. It is sealed from the factory. Not a job for the faint hearted as my Varajet was a reconditioned one and still "shiny"!
Of course, some will say you can run the vac advance module from manifold vac, but why you would want advance timing at idle on a L6 had me stumped.
Good luck with it!
Plug your advance into the EGR vac system, as this is also ported vac and only supplies vac once engine is warmed up and only with the throttle open.
Thanks for all that info guys. I really appreiciate it. I'm going to go for the EGR approach and see how that goes. I'm not particullarly too fussed over the port, and I don't wish to drill into the carby, as I might be upgrading to more powerful Webber down the track (thinking about it anyway).
Thanks again, I'll probably suss this out over the next few days when I have a bit of time.
All the best!
