i have just fitted a efi 5L to my VH. turns out it is not as simple as i first thought. the engine is in an my next drama is i have been told that i ned to fit a fuel tank from a vl 6CYL as they are fuel injected and have a return line. is this a simple bolt in and of i go or is there more i need to do like modify brackets and what fuel pump will i need to fit?
If your VH is a sedan, you will need to fit a fuel tank from an EFI model VK, VL or VN to VS sedans. They all have a fuel return line that goes back into the tank. For more info refer to the V6 conversion thread (VB-VK forum).
thanks mate your a champ
no u dont need to fit anything! ive just had mine all done a month ago. you should already have 2 lines in it. all the guys did was put a high pressure fuel pump and filter in and hooked up the supply and return hoses to the existing fuel lines. but do check your car tho! u can see them coming up on the driver side chassis rail. if not get ya head under the car and look for the connections at the tank.! let me know how ya go!
his wont have a return line because its a vh. Yours would have had one because i take it was a efi 6 already which has a return line in the tank already. vh never had the efi 6 only vk's did. any efi tank up till vs will be a straigth swap with yours mate should just bolt straight in.

mines a 1982 vh sle factory 308(was). 2 fuel lines and a charcoal line. my uncle owned it since 91-92. still had the 308 in when i bought it but fitted with a holley instead of the roches. other than that it was virgin. dont ask me why...about the 2nd fuel line but its all there stock as a rock. strange i know! got me stumped too!
308's with an electric pump have a small return line which is not large enough for EFI and you will run into problems, excessive fuel pressure, pump failure poor fuel economy ect.
So pretty much. Change the tank I'd the belt option or would just running a bigger return line do the job?
If you are goinig to doit properly and get it registered/engineered you will need an unleaded tank anyway. The VL tank is probably the easiest fit. Later models the filler neck needs a minor alteration.
Alright so been under the car having a good look around an the fuel system has three lines. From what I can guess there in the supply and a small return. The other is the same size as the supply line that is the charcoal canister purge line that is hooked up to the fuel tank breather line. The return line is far to small to be used so I am guessing that MR J-MAN must be using the purge line.
While I am on here can any one tell me if I need to use the fuel charcoal filter, I want to rip it out because it looks shit
If your refering to the charcoal canister canister Yes you must have it, the old VB-VK ones do look shit Run a later model canister it is much smaller, I mounted mine down in front of the aircon compressor off the chassis rail. you barely see it down there

Balls is there a smaller style you can use or has any one moved it to the boot or any were that's not in the engine bay
you need a VL or later tank not just because of the return line (return line on a V8 VH is too small) but also because the EFI tanks have a swirl pot inside the tank. All EFI engines need a swirl pot. Unlike a carb engine, an EFI engine doesn't have a fuel bowl so they need the swirl pot. Without a swirl pot, when the tank gets low in fuel and you go around a corner, the fuel pump won't pickup fuel, and without the reserve of a fuel bowl the engine can lean out and/or flat spot until the pump picks up fuel again.
I put a 304 EFi and T5 combo in my VH SLE top 30. Below is a pic of how i set up the charcoal canister. Hope that helps.
Also I used the tank from a VS sedan. Bolted straight in.
And i put a modified VL battery try over the top.

To work properly a carbon canister cant be on its side but it doesnt really matter, the greenies precious HC's aren't going into the atmosphere with it like that.
Why not just mount the VP and later canister like I have off the chassis rail down low inline with the aircon pumpt & power steer pump, it fits nicely down there and all the hoses fit.
I dont have a pic of it If I could be bothered uncovering the car in the shed id take a pic for you

I used a tank from my VP donor car you need to shorten the filler neck as it is too long and replace the rubber hoses they will be in poor condition the drivers side strap bolts straight up but the centre one has a different mount due to the IRS i just cut the VK and VP bracket and bolted them to fit (VN ones bolt straight in) the good thing about these tanks is their increased capacity. Return lines from a VL would be the easiest.
