    Default Wheels and Clearance

Hey all, just wondering what looks good and fits on a Vh?
I understand that Simmons is the way to go on the old girls but my pockets aren't flowing with money.

So what else goes good on a old girl?

I've been wanting to go 19's because I look at 16/17's and just think.. What's the point? Im just not sure if 19s would fit without modifications plus.. And I going too big?

Please let me know what you think.

I dont get what you mean by 'whats the point'.

I think 19's are gay as aids.

But its your car do whatever to it you like

    You asked for opinions...

And for the record, I agree. Nothing wrong with 16's on an early commo. 17's max, depending on the wheel.

16 inch are as big as you want to go. You can run a VT brake upgrade and the discs fill the wheels up. Walkys always look good and are not expensive.

depends on the style of wheel and the dish whether bigger looks better or smaller.
I currently have smooth cast 16" walkies that have been chromed. That look ok.
Previously i had 18" xhp sabres that looked much better in proportion to the car with the deeper dish they had but with the rest of my suspension being all too rock hard 18's were horrible in the wet.
The walkie's are much better in the wet but if i could turn back time, i'd have kept the 18's and softened up my suspension to suit.

At the end of the day it all depends on these factors:
    Your taste
The design of the wheel (whether it suits the car or not)
Your current or intended suspension setup
And the colour/model of your car (wheels that look good on a vk with plastic bars don't always look as good on earlier commodores with chrome metal bars, it's a minor change to a very similar shell but it makes a big difference) Same with the colour of your car and or colour coded bars and chrome trims on the body work, my other car i'll be getting soon is a emarald green vb and i know the chrome walkies will look better on a dark car like the vb than my white vh SS.

I've seen 18's 17's and 16's on many early birds that range from looking ok to really setting the look of the car.
I rarely see anything bigger on early girls, not so much that they wouldn't fit but they just dont really seem to fit the rest of the cars image.

I hope this perspective helps, i'm not trying to force an opinion but rather getting you to think about it in more depth. I looked for a long time at countless catalogues and heaps of wheels looked good, just not on my car, on other cars yes, mine... no.

anything above 17inches is actually illegal for this era of commodore, but how often does anyone get pulled over if they are behaving and their car looks respectable

Good point, I was under the assumption that 18's were fine due to the vn's sharing similar spec suspension etc so the sizings would carry across. But like you said, if you behave and your car's neat and tidy there's no reason for them to pick you.

I only got pulled over so they could talk about my car and call it a VK when it's a VH, (usually when i'm running late and dont have time to sit and talk about my car)

IMO anything bigger than 18's are trouble in my local area, plenty of people i know have had cracks welded up on their 20" rims due to rough roads. I don't know about other's but I wouldn't enjoy regularly replacing wheels or having them repaired due to rough roads and potholes.

It seems I may have offended some people. I'm sorry if I have.

The general reason why I wanted the big mags was to make a big impression. But then again, it seems to draw the wrong attention.

Simmons are still the go, I bought a set of Simmons OM16 (16x8") rims for $450 on ebay, you just need to keep looking.
These wheels are a little rought a few gutter marks, but spending $250 per wheel will see them fully rebuilt as good as new. I bought them as spares, or for track wheels.

So If you buy the right wheels you can fix them up later when you have more cash

I don't think you've offended anyone mate, we're all giving constructive opinions and or corrections here and there.
It all comes down to what you have chosen and are happy with at the end of the day minus the physical limitations of whether or not the size you choose will fit or not or will look the part and still handle/grip/drive the way you want.

I got 18's on my vk. And its legal. Have to be same rolling distance as standard rim, with 5% give or take, just go smaller profile.

Big wheels clash with the spring mounts on the front struts. You will need to change tocoil overs to fit.

I'd prefer a 16 or 17 on a VH, the extra meaty tires make the car look tough. 19s are little too far, and they can spoil the ride.

Hey mate easy one there buy 2 sets of wheels big ones 18" new style ..... Then a old school set like convo pro's or simmons...... You can run 18"s on your car the R.W.C mob i went through said its fine as long as the rolling diameter does not change from standard.... BIGGER RIMS =smaller profile tyres!!!!!!!!
At first you don't succeed try, try again !!! When all else fails pay someone to fix it!!!!!!!!!!

each to there own but no more than 18s for me....and I believe as long the rolling diameter does not change from standard you can put 18s on.
