Quick question - would a 1400kg trolley jack be ok to lift the front of my car to put some stands under? I'm looking at buying one from Supercheap and there is a huge price difference between the 1400kg and the 2500kg...
Yeah, more than enough, that's all you need to lift the front/rear of a car.
'Ah well, I suppose it had to come to this.'
spend the extra money and get the 2500 kg jack will pay for itself in the long run
Cheers mate. Is the middle of the K frame the best lift point?
yep best spot for lifting
im not entirely sure i would trust a $27 jack. to much to lose if it breaks. got me wondering why its so cheap.
not that a expensive one cant break. age does bad things to tools under those kind of pressures, make sure its looked after to ensure a long life
Well get the $27 one and just don't put anything more than your arm under there until you have chassis stands under it. As long as the tyres are still on the car, the car can't drop enough for the chassis to pin your arm down so you will still be safe.

those cheap trolley jacks are fine for jacking up to put stands under or to change a wheel, but you will find after a while they will leak oil but its just a case of topping it up every now and then through the screw that you turn to lower it if i remember right.
I bought a 2000kg jack from supercheap and it didnt cost to much more than the 1400kg one. I just jack up the car then put the stands under.Never get under your car if it is only held up with the jack.It may come down on you.
OOOhh yeah the stands will under the car as soon as that jack has done it's job! (lifting the bloody car up!)
the 2500kg jack will lift the car to a better working height if your changing a trans, or wanting to weld up the exhaust.
The thing you'll find with the smaller jack is it will be damn hard to jack it up compared to a 2500 jack..
The amount of leverage is a lot more with the 2500...
try some of the trade places I bought my tradequip 2500kg twin piston I think it was from bursons it was only $160-180 It was really cheap, its been great I lifts 2ton of tractor up no worries, my work ute with 1000km in the back twin piston pump makes it really quick up also

Unless you planning on supporting the whole weight of the car off the ground a 2500kg isn't really necessary. Especially when used in combo with stands.
At this stage it's just to get it onto stands so I can change the starter motor which has died, fortunately in my garage not in the middle of nowhere! Got to fork out 300 or so bucks for the starter and just can't stretch it to $180 for the 2500kg jack at the mo which would normally be my preference.. Hopefully I won't need to change the tranny or weld up the exhaust anytime soon since they have not long been changed /upgraded .... fingers crossed!
