hey
blue 202 i need to try to set the timing but this is a new car too me and i have no idea what the cam is.
in my manual it is 6 degrees and the engine hardy runs
this is a slight knock but i think its the miss
thanks for ur help Ben
lol. you got a timing light? tacho and vacuum gauge?
you diont sell yourself as someone who should be messing with timing.
yea ive got all that, it just runs shit maybe somthing else,
Did you cam it?
Are the timing gears meshed correctly?
Is the dizzy in the right spot? Firing no. 1, when it comes around 6 degrees BTDC?
What sort of cam is in it?
Did you cam it? no
Are the timing gears meshed correctly? havnt looked (how do i)
Is the dizzy in the right spot? Firing no. 1, when it comes around 6 degrees BTDC? yes
What sort of cam is in it? dont know
thanks for ur help![]()
Those question's weren't for your help, they were for our help to try to understand a little more about the situation you are in.
Has it ever ran since you've had it?
If the timing is set to 6* BTDC, the thing should at least run half decent, I'd be re-checking the leads, the dizzy timing and the timing marks on the timing gears, pull off the timing cover... Google![]()
ok thanks for ur help
6 degrees isnt enough to be running properley with a hei dizzy. we will need to know the advance curve on the dizzy to give you any better ideas.
im gonna give you a way of getting it right but you have to know EXCATLY what pinging/pinking/rattling/pre-ignition is. cos if you dont know and you allow it to ping too much, you will end up with a nice hole in the top of your piston. so i am gonna preface this with:
IF YOU KILL YOUR ENGINE ITS NOT MY FAULT
i dunno how simple you need me to be so ill be uber simple. the dizzy will have either a 14mm bolt or a 9/16th bolt clamping down the dizzy. loosen that off a few turns so its still tight but the dizzy can be turned with a bit of force.
next hook up your tacho and timing light, disconnect the vacuum advance hose off the dizzy (vacuum hose going to the shiny cylinder thing on the side of the dizzy) plug the hose so its not leaking vac.
next get some liquid paper or white paint and paint the little 0 on the timing cover tab. turn the harmonic balancer till you find the mark paint that also. then rotate the mark so its on +4 ATDC then paint an extra little line on the balancer at -6 BTDC. that will give you your 10BTCD mark. rotate the 10 mark to +4 and put another smaller mark (so its easy to tell the difference between marks) on 6 and thall be 20BTDC then do it again for 30BTDC. so now you will have 0, 10, 20 and 30
you will need an assistant to control the throttle and tacho while you stare at your harmonic balancer. so to start with at idle your timing (with a cam) should be around 8 degrees so guestimate about 2 degrees off your 10BTCD mark to start with. get your assistant to rev the engine slowly up to around 3000rpm your timing should advance. stock mechanical advance should be about 15 (really roughly, i dont know what 6 cylinders are meant to be) degrees. so by 3000 rpm you should be seeing all 15 degrees so your timing will be somewhere around 23 degrees. if its below that then there may be other issues to deal with.
now vacuum advance is a weird one. im a 'ported vac' guy, there are also a lot of 'full vac' guys out there, but since im writing this then im rightmake sure your vac advance is hooked up to ported vac. which means the vacuum port that doesnt have any vacuum at idle
so your timing is set and your vac is hooked up. take it for a drive. listen really carefully for pinging and if it pings, then stop the car immediatly and retard the timing by 2 degrees. but really it should/wouldnt ping at 8. if anything you may need to be advanceing the timing.
so if you are willing to push it, you drove the car, it didnt ping everything is all good, then advance it by 2 degrees and repeat. keep advancing it till it pings then retard it to the point where it stops.
and thats it.
