    Default Whats the better approach?

Ok, so I want a manual v8 vk, but on first glance at carsales.com all the base cars under 5k are either auto v8s or manual v6s... So my question is what would be a better approach

    1) Buy a manual v6 and convert to v8

    2) buy an auto v8 and convert to manual

I've wanted a manual v8 vk since I was 15 and finally in a position to get one

What you think of this price breakdown

    PHASE 1 - now
    Vk 3000 - 5000

    PHASE 2 - month later
    wheel/tyre - 2000
    Engine - 7000
    Drivetrain - 3000
    Suspension - 2000

    PHASE 3 - undetermined
    Paint/panel - 5000

    Thoughts/comments?

I'd get an auto V8 and manual it. Easy job on those things. Any savings you will find getting a 6cyl one will be probably be offset fitting the V8 and then some. That said, a efi 5 litre from a VN> would be great.

the efi would be ok, but i really want the carby. i like the c.o.m.e racing stuff. Anyone know what there like? anyone know what the c.o.m.e racing carby 355ci ss1,ss2,ss3,ss4 prices are like? just roughly. or what 7k would get me, assuming I get a decent existing 5L engine from a vk etc?

Just to confirm, you want to spend 24k on a VK in a couple of months? i would buy something built as said above, end up with ten times as much power and less out of pocket. Up to you though

Grab that and pump 10k into it for example (poor example)

    I would say buy a 6cyl VK & an VN-VP etc EFI 5L manual

buying the right doner car you should break even and have a gearbox & 5L I bought my last doner car for $700 with a good 5L in it it was a calais, sold the auto for $550 bought a T5 for $600, sold a heap of other bits off the car then sold the wreak for $600

Spend $1000 on a VK theres a 85 VK berlina near me with an EFI 202 for $1200 in desparate need of a respray interior is excellent, as its EFI the car is setup for the 5L in terms of fuel lines etc, swap the brakes and front suspension off the VN-VP into the VK connect it up get the exhaust done a few fiddly bits etc I would say you would have an EFI 5L with a fresh respray for around $5k-$6k on the road doing most of the work yourself.

Base question, grab the V8 and auto and convert it.

Another idea could be to grab a Gen3 V8 and convert it to a carby. They make great horsepower and doesn't cost an arm and a leg to convert plus getting spares / boxes etc is easy

Only if it does not meet emissions originally set out for the car which you could easily do. Also depends on which state you are in

Nope, the block is EFi, stays EFI. ADR explains that.

Best explain that one to the NT
A number of EFI cars now run carby. I was going to do it to my Gen3 but I would loose cruise control.
